web-hosting, ideas?

yeah, so i was pondering the idea of web-hosting. i've never had my own domain/web-site before. to be honest, i've never been interested before. but i was mulling over the possibilities tonight, and it got me thinking

and now i'm throwing some questions out to you all ...

• so, has anyone had their own web-site before?

I've gone through about 4 free-hosted websites. It wasn't a matter of storage space but more a matter of not having a domain name that was decent.

I'd look into that as step 1. Find a domain name that you want and see how much that'll set you back. As for hosting, even some free hosts that aren't too add heavy might be worth it, and they usually have the option of upgrading to an add-free site if you find you like 'em.

If you want I'll scour me e-mail and dig up some hosts I used in the past. One of 'em was particularly good.
