it's just as funny, now that I can read some japanese, seeing all the kanji on t-shirts and in tattoos back home.

I heard a story about britney spears, in that she got a kanji tattoo of hentai, which she thought means different. In some scenarios the first kanji, hen, can mean different, but the best translation of it is strange, and with tai on the end it means very strange. that could have been a rumour though.

I heard a slightly different story. In this case, I believe it was Madonna. She wanted a kanji to say "Mysterious" (alluring, etc) .... but she ended up getting the kanji for "strange" ;) and then quickly had it laser removed.
