When Shannon first conned Boone out of his money, she could feel the anxiety flowing through her veins at the thought of him figuring it out. Not guilt because she deserved that money. His bitch of a mother had held out on her after her father had died, so she was only taking what was already hers.
Each time after the first only confirmed what she already knew: That he loved her and that she held a large degree of control over him. Enough that he’d come at her every desperate plea. She’d been too high off that power to consider how he’d feel if he knew. She wasn’t really stealing from him anyway, she thought. He was just a financial link between her and his mother.
By the time Boone found out what was going on, he’d already flown out to Australia to “save” her. Seeing that expression of betrayal and hurt on his face sent a tinge of guilt through her like a chill down her spine, but she slapped it away and reminded herself she deserved this.
Now for the first time as she stares at his blood-stained body, deprived of life and warmed only by the heat of the island, she feels the regret, remorse and shame she’d never allowed herself to experience before damp upon her cheeks. A sense of guilt and blame rising from her stomach for causing this, for doing this to him. He doesn’t deserve this, and she hates to think of what she deserves for killing the only man she’d ever once loved back.
