I think my reactions have been fairly emotional, and of course I can't say for sure, even having seen the footage, as to what happened in Oakland on New Years Day.
However, I -can- say that the Oakland police have mishandled the situation and must bear some of the responsibility for the riots.
“We’ve got to have a real investigation that people can have confidence in,” said Mr. Dellums on Wednesday night. “And my sense of it is that part of this reaction is that people have lost confidence.”
It's this lack of confidence in the police's ability to investigate one of their own (and yes, I know he was transit police, not real police) that leads to this kind of emotional reaction.
