[The feed tuns on, and Luke is sitting looking nervously at the camera. Claire, the cat, is sitting on his lap, paws on the keys of the communicator.]

Um--well, I know they've updated the communicators so that we can reach each other when we're far apart, so I think everyone can see this..

Is everyone all right? I don't know how far everyone was ( Read more... )

[ Oh, hey there, Luke. There's a pretty confused-looking Japanese lady, a great deal older than you, staring into your video feed right now. She was trying to find a way to contact the scientists, and she was not expecting to see another face so young, trapped here. ]

Oh--hello! [ It's pretty nice of him to be worrying, she thinks. They must have had to travel far, if the communicators' range had to be expanded. She picked up that much, on her English skills, and wonders if he can speak Japanese. ] You...wouldn't happen to be a friend of Conan's would you?

[Japanese. He really needed to practice. Here goes, Ran. His expression started out as very friendly and cheerful, but it's quickly become something along the lines of perplexed. It requires a lot of thinking to answer in his very broken Japanese.]

Hello...

Conan's...friend..? [Forget saying yes, he just nods.]

Sorry...my Japanese...is bad.

[ --oh! That's okay, Ran knows some English; she can follow reasonably well, if you don't speak too fast. But the boy looks pretty determined, so...she keeps up the Japanese for now, but goes slower. ]

My...my name is Ran. I am Conan's friend too.

Do you want me to speak English?

[ ...his Japanese isn't all that bad though, really c: Or maybe it's his cuteness that's charming her. ]

[Don't get excited Ran, it absolutely must be cuteness, because he is speaking with an English accent as he stumbled through his response.]

Um...n..no, that...okay. Practice..good!

[Determined would be the understatement of the century. There is a very long pause has he tries to remember how to say 'miss' in Japanese.]

Nice...meet you...Miss Ran. My name...Luke!

Oh! It's nice to meet you, too, Luke.

[ So she obliges, with a smile, speaking Japanese at a slow pace so that it'd be easier for him. It's admirable, really; most children she knew at that age weren't too concerned with practicing a second language. ]

You look...so young, to be in such an awful place. Like Conan. I hope you have not been here long.

[ There's a concerned expression on her face, both worried about his well-being and his understanding of her. ]

Conan's...um... [He hesitates. How do you say younger, again?] younger...I think.

Been here...nine months? Almost.

Not...too bad...Made friends here.

Learn..Japanese here too!

Nine months!

[ She looks rather flabbergasted at that--that's the majority of a whole year! She lets out a small gasp, thinking how worried the kid's poor parents must be, but she smiles nonetheless. His optimism is contagious. ]

Well, I'm glad...that you can feel that way. Conan-kun is very friendly--and I am, too. We would love to help you, with your Japanese sometime!

[ ...after all, it doesn't look like there's anything else much better to do here. ]

[He catches that look, but he doesn't quite know what it's in relation to. Nine months isn't too awful, when you know time isn't passing at home. Not that he could explain that in Japanese, of course--he could hardly explain it in English.]

Not...same as home...not so bad now.

Conan...speak Japanese?

[But he's moved past that quickly.] Help..me practice?

[He looks away, off the screen, and mumbles to himself very much in English:] It would be very good if I got some proper practice..

Help you practice--exactly! It's...what you're doing right now, isn't it?

[ She nods, not exactly sure what he's referring to when he says it's not the same as his home. But... 'not so bad now,' that was good, right? She admires his optimism, really. So she smiles at him. ]

Ah...nine months. [ She says it again, thoughtful. ] You must have...many friends, then.

Some friends...some gone home now, some still here. Sad when people leave...but good they go home.

[Optimism was a necessity for not going crazy in Discedo, especially when one was as neurotically easily frightened as Luke was.]

I don't know...lots of words yet. Hard to practice without textbook.

Go home...so...there is a way...

[ She's not sure if she's actually talking to Luke there or just mumbling to herself, but it does make her think. If there really is a way out...she'd have to find it somehow. Not just for herself, but for everyone else who'd been kidnapped, too.

Ah, but her demeanor changes when Luke mentions the textbook. She smiles a bit sheepishly. ]

Oh, you're right. [ He's a very smart boy! ] A textbook...that would help, huh? But...that would be very hard to find, here.

[ Because who carries around textbooks when they happen to be kidnapped away to another world? :( She's almost beginning to wish he had, though, if only so he could help him now. ]

We not choose...just happens.

[He smiles weakly at the mention of the textbooks.] Never thought...I would miss regular school and regular class day!

I like...lessons with Professor more, but now any school...would be good!

[It's like she could see the gears turning as he tries to get the words out.] Mr. Japan teaches us words he knows. That how I am learning!

[ ...she's not sure she likes the idea of...not being able to choose. In fact, she doesn't like it at all. This...this would have to change. But for now, she'll worry about Luke. Laughing a little bit.

You never know what you miss until it's gone, huh? She knows that well now... ]

You know, I--I miss school, too. [ A chuckle. Although Shinichi--yeah, he could come back aaaanny time now. ] Do you have a favorite professor?

[ ...and she looks a little puzzled at the next part. She'll just assume Mr. Japan is--simply someone who knows Japanese, who perhaps hadn't told him his name yet. ]

Ah--he is doing a good job teaching you!

Yes! Favorite Professor here! I'm...um...Drat, how do you say apprentice?... Do not know word, but he...here too!

[Luke smiles, glad to think that his Japanese isn't so awful.] Have nothing else...to do but study!

Ahh... [ Ran considers, noticing that he is having trouble thinking of the word. ] Student, maybe? ...apprentice?

[ She stops to gauge his reaction, but still moves on somewhat, motivated by her curiosity. ]

That is great, though! That you have someone you know--someone you respect, here with you. I hope I get to meet him one day. W-what is his name?

[ ....hmm. An idea-- ]

...maybe you two can help me practice, with English...if I help with Japanese!

[ Grin. It'd be a good way to keep busy, wouldn't it? ]

Apprentice! Thank you.

[He nods, beaming. Even if the Professor didn't want him doing much to get himself in trouble, Luke was happy he was here. He had been the first face Luke had seen when he arrived.]

Professor Layton! He...with me here.

[Luke is nodding emphatically. Practicing in conversation would be much better than reciting words.] That...would be good!
