Fanart History: Vocaloids. Voice synthesizer programs which development moved from being a mere computer software to singing androids in an Earth were robotic development is finally starting to grasp the concepts of artificial life though only for specific chores. At first they were used as mere backup voices and effects at songs, when the first android form was released they were used further as an alternative to hiring backup singing even at concerts and finally once the solo potential of each Vocaloid was discovered they were launched into full fledged musical careers. Metallic skeletons sustained by a core of constant processing, cooled down with pipes to prevent overheating, they depend entirely of that core to ensure proper functioning, even if the rest of their bodies were to be destroyed as long as the core remains they can be downloaded to a new body or a computer to continue working. The core processes and stores all the data a Vocaloid receives, be it by normal download through the wireless connection they posses or registered by any of the sensors distributed over their body and that emulate the five human senses. The resistant skin that covers the metallic skeleton is soft enough to be mistaken as real skin, warmed up by a system of tubes wrapped all over the skeleton, is designed to act as a sensor to heat and cold, sending every information registered by touch to the core and allowing the Vocaloid to show up a proper human response. Everything they learn and live through is stored in an internal database which together with an advanced A.I. system that is in constant development within the core itself, allows them to act as human as possible.
Luka Megurine was welcomed into the world as a Vocaloid in the last days of a January month. Built over a metallic skeleton shaped as a human one, there were no muscles, tendons, ligaments or even veins in her instead a wide set of wires, pipes springs and chips replaced them. An android built to sing for others, unable to compose her own songs or even sing songs unless they were uploaded to her database, Luka was the third installment of the Vocaloid2 series and an improvement over the two previous installments, Miku Hatsune and Rin and Len Kagamine, having been given a more developed processor than theirs she was able to sing with ease in both Japanese and English with the objective of transcending borders and cultural barriers.
The first thing Luka was able to store in her mind, aside from the data of the songs she was meant to sing, were the faces of several others like her, which she was supposed to consider family, her "older" sisters and brothers even though some of them were made with a younger appearance than herself. She was the youngest yet she had the body of an adult and her voice was meant for smooth and mature tunes, she was given lyrics of mature content and her personality was expected to match her appearance. And yet, she was also expected to consider Miku, who was made to be like a child of sixteen years old, and Rin and Len, both resembling a mere fourteen, her "older siblings". The situation did not compute correctly in her brain, however she was never given the chance to actually sit and try to work out it, she was a Vocaloid, she was made to sing and thus she soon found herself buried with work.
Thanks to her capacity of singing in two languages soon she became incredibly popular to the point of even having some of her own songs surpass songs by Miku who had been at the top for a long time. At first this realization scared her, worried about how her "older" siblings would react, however Miku didn't took any offense on this instead praising her talent as well as Len and Rin, asking her to help them with their English. Though this made it harder for her to really consider them 'older' than her it also made her feel accepted and calmed her first fears upon being connected. Being the youngest Vocaloid she feared there wouldn't be public for her, however the world proved to be bigger than she had expected and her voice and skills were unique enough to warrant her her own fan-base while being accepted wholeheartedly too by the other fan-bases leading her to duets and other songs with the other Vocaloids. Constantly busy with work and songs Luka decided to push aside her confusion over how she should act and be with the other Vocaloids, instead using the music to bond with them aside what it had been dictated in her program at first.
Bits of extra information:
Information and development history of the Vocaloid software Personality: The youngest Vocaloid of the new series was made with the body of a young adult woman and a default personality settings that matched it. Luka came to the world believing she was to be mature, elegant and somewhat mysterious. And that's exactly what she tries to be, however upon meeting the other Vocaloids she found she was also expected to be the youngest even if her character and appearance didn't match it, striving conflicting emotions in her. Due her little time being active, Luka is one of the most emotionally volatile Vocaloids, while she tries her best to keep her role and fulfill the expectations placed in her, internally she's a complete mess, doubting and fearing, confused about how things go and how she really should react. She has a great sense of pride, which is mostly what keeps her from crumbling and entering into a depressing emotional state, she's the first Vocaloid to be fully bilingual while her "older siblings" all needed specific adjustments to emulate any language that wasn't Japanese, and she takes great pride in that seeing it as a proof that she's an improvement yet again in the Vocaloid series. Even if she's never arrogant about that idea the pride that comes from that knowledge fuels her will, she's always trying to do things perfectly, to meet every expectation no matter how small or silly it could be.
Out of all the Vocaloids Luka is the one who works the hardest and most professionally, however she's also the one who gets less attached to her master. For Luka a master is just a person who has hired her to complete a job, once the job is done the master has no need for her and she has no need of them either unless they're willing to give her more songs to sing in which case she would be called again. She keeps herself polite and respectful, accepting anything she's asked and completing any task, keeping any doubts or hesitations to herself.
Luka doesn't know what's like to be left to her own devices, to her own free will. Even when just dealing with her family she sticks to the roles she's expected to fulfill, being kind and helpful with her siblings as much as she can, being understanding and mature despite being the youngest, but yet keeping an emotional distance between the other Vocaloids and her. It's not that she doesn't love them, in fact Luka admires and loves the other Vocaloids and each and all of the masters she has ever had, she feels deeply honored and moved each time a master chooses her among her older and more experienced siblings as well as feeling the same way when her siblings ask her to join them in singing and playing considering that, being the youngest, she really shouldn't be treated like an equal or so easily accepted. However, the love she feels for the other Vocaloids doesn't entirely match what she's supposed to feel, despite acknowledging Miku's and the twins experience and longer active life she just can't stop considering them actually like younger siblings instead of older ones, and though this may not seem like an important detail it's enough to throw Luka into a conflicted state and make her keep some emotional distance in fears that the other Vocaloids would be annoyed by her failure in accepting those three as her older siblings.
If left with no directions or instructions Luka will enter into a panicked state, not used to be free to choose on her own, and she's likely to desperately try to find someone or something that would tell her what to do exactly or what is expected of her. She's always concerned about what others expect of her and thus never bothers to stop and consider what she expects of herself, also, given her failure to accept something as simple as Miku and the twins being her older siblings she tends to disregard her emotions considering them an unsure source of information.
Bits of extra information:
A very brief compiled information about Luka Strengths: As an android of advanced science, Luka's body is that of an young adult woman, emulating all the normal functions of a normal body, including the feeding process and such even if she was not expected to make use of those she was given them in order to make it easier for the masters that would hire her for long-run projects to adapt to have her around. She can do anything an average woman can do except bearing children though she can get involved in the normal intercourse that would lead to this. Despite all the measures to make Luka as human as possible she's still an android after all and thus has a higher endurance than humans as well as lacking the need of breathe air to survive -though, as stated, she does need to eat as the food is processed by a complex system to acquire extra energy to keep her running. Finally she possess excellent singing and dancing skills given that those two skills were the main objective for which she was built.
Luka was programmed by default to be mature as well as kind and polite overall in order to deal with the masters that may hire her. She's often helpful and very professional-like and always tries her best in anything she's asked to do, she also has a deep sense of elegance and manners and guides herself by it. Despite originally being only bilingual, this capacity also enables her to adapt better to other languages by mixing the phonetic systems in her database and choosing the most approximate result to the phonetic system of the third language she's expected to sing. Thanks to her wireless database system connection she's able to access the Internet or establish a local connection with a computer in order to update her own databases or find information whenever she needs it, whoever the wireless range isn't infinite and in fact she has to be close to a computer or an antenna to be able to properly establish the connection, though supposedly she should be able to connect with other Vocaloids to share information if there were any nearby.
Weaknesses: Despite being an android there's not much in Luka that differentiates her from normal humans, there's no enhanced strength or speed for her and, despite the enhanced endurance she posses due her condition as a robot, her body can be damaged just like any other human. She will never gain muscle or strength beyond what she was born with unless she goes a complete upgrade for which she would have to be turned off and could suffer some memory lost. She depends entirely of her core, if any damage is done to it, physically or by terms of data corruption she can go from a complete termination of her system -thus killing her-, to a change of personality due the corruption of her databases.
Luka may have been programmed to be a mature young woman but in reality she's has been around only for nine months making her completely lack much experience in anything that doesn't involve singing or dancing, including social skills aside for her "siblings" or her masters and fans, unsure on how to deal with anyone else. She does have a wide array of knowledge stored in her database, however her lack of experience and condition as an android can cause her to not understand the information she has correctly or completely leading her to confussion. Thanks to her core and database she may be able to make simple mathematical calculations faster than humans or be able to provide a wide and completely theoretical array of information, however as an android whose purpose is to sing she is far from being a genius robot, she may be considered not better than a normal calculator given that she can't do complicated operations either on her own unless instructed.
Her A.I. enables her to emulate human emotions, however her awareness of her being an android and how she's supposed to work often conflict with those emotions making them hard to understand for her as her objective part may dictate something that doesn't match what her emotions tell her. For example her dilemma about her "older siblings", while she was programmed to see them as her elders emotionally she can't bring herself to accept that. The fact that she has emotions also means she can portray even the worst of the human emotions, jealousy, stress, rage and even lust if the circumstances dictate it, however she can also be far more volatile than humans regarding those emotions given the natural confusion born from the conflict between emotion and theory.
