Of dark days and fun things

School's finally over (just one lecture to go) and my Christmas break is about to begin. I have two learning diaries to write, which are going to be a pain, but otherwise I can take it easy for the next three weeks. This fall's classes have been pretty disappointing since I feel like I haven't really learned much of anything in most of them. All these theory courses tell me hardly anything useful, and I'm getting really out of practice when I don't actually get to translate anything! I know I could just choose a random text and start translating it for practice, but do you really think I'm that diligent? As if. My career prospects are starting to look rather bleak...

I hate how dark winters are in Finland because this constant darkness makes me feel so tired all the time. It's always dark when I wake up and darkness starts falling again at three in the afternoon. I seriously need a better lamp in my room if I want to regain at least some of my energy.

For the past few days I've been amusing myself by watching random Youtube videos and I briefly got hooked on Britain's Got Talent videos. Anyone else watched those or the series on TV? If you haven't, I encourage you to watch this one:

Who's laughing now? Proof that looks aren't everything. ^_^

I just can't help smiling every time I see this. See how at the beginning all the people in the audience are laughing at her and rolling their eyes, and then she opens her mouth and everyone is given a much needed wake-up call. Bravo. The auditions of Paul Potts, Andrew Johnston and Hollie Steel are also definitely worth watching. Made my day.

I ordered the first season of Merlin from Amazon and I felt so giddy when it arrived yesterday. I'm still reading lots of Merlin fic (and not doing much of anything else, but I'll soon run out of things to read as the fandom isn't that large). I also have a couple of ideas for new fics, but knowing how bad I'm at keeping my promises I'm not going to promise anything. I do have two pages written for one idea though...

In other news, I finally got my WWU credits transferred to my degree here. I was really pleased to get 66 study points for my 41 credits, since on average I only manage to get a bit over 50 study points a year. This means that by the end of this school year I'll have around 280 out of the 300 study points that are required for my Master's Degree, and just the Master's thesis seminar I'll be taking next year will give me another 40 study points. In other words, I could pass next year by doing pretty much nothing else aside from my thesis (Finnish education system, you are very strange, but thanks for all the free time), but I know I'll take some extra classes anyway since I know I'll need all the translation practice I can get. I'm hoping to start working on real translation assignments next year so that I'll have at least a bit of experience before I graduate.
