xxxholic drabble: Pretend
Starting off with a short drabble set in the xxxholic universe. You wouldn't believe how many hours it took me to write such a short piece of text. And the result still feels somewhat awkward... Well, I hope at least someone enjoys it.

Summary: Watanuki is pretending not to notice. Doumeki is waiting for him to stop pretending.
Things between Watanuki and Doumeki have been gradually changing since the first time they met. At first there had been insults and shouting and one-sided rivalry; and later spirit arrows and bento and grudging gratefulness. Lately there has been less shouting and more smiles and maybe even a tiny bit of friendship. Like Yuuko has been saying, Watanuki is changing, and he has yet to reach the end of that transformation. Watanuki has noticed the direction in which his relationship with Doumeki seems to be heading, but that doesn’t mean he has to admit it or accept it. Instead, he is pretending not to notice.
Doumeki doesn’t pretend. A part of him has known from the start about the potential in their relationship, and he has just been waiting for Watanuki to notice it too. He doesn’t mind if it takes a while, because he has a lot of patience, and he knows that Watanuki is a little slow on the uptake when it comes to his own love life. In the mean time, he is content to just stay by Watanuki’s side, ready to give away anything that is his to give in order to make sure that Watanuki stays alive long enough to get over his pretence.
For Doumeki knows that one day Watanuki will give in and admit that there is something between them: something more than spirit arrows and bento and shared body parts. Yuuko may call it hitsuzen, but even without any supernatural interference Doumeki would choose to keep waiting and protecting until Watanuki is ready to admit what Doumeki has known for a long time.
That Watanuki loves him too.
