It is so hot, like it's burning down his chest. He is too close to the fire that’s eating almost the entire forest. Yifan has dropped him from the height of god-knows-how-much above the sea-level, and Joonmyun's everywhere hurts. He can't move from his lying position near to the river, it’s a relief that Yifan at least has aimed a good spot for him. He looks up to the sky to see that the war is still happening. He can see Yifan's fire brutally attacks the enemy, but how the enemy is still keeping up with the prince's pace is what worrying Joonmyun.

Yifan is tired, he can feel--sense--it. He has fought for too long, used his magic too much. Joonmyun doesn't even want to admit when he starts to count to Yifan's fall.

"Yifan," he mumbles, knowing the dragon would heard him. "Yifan, just leave it to the other dragons, goddamnit!"

He hears the dragon making noises from above, Yifan looks like he's in terrible pain. "No, he hurts you." Joonmyun can hear Yifan hisses in his head. His right arm tingles right on the spot where enemy's fire has burnt into his skin. It hurts, but it's not something Yixing can't fix.

"I'm not hurt. Now if you would be so humble to take a maneuver back to the castle--" Joonmyun stops midway. The enemy has their fire breath on Yifan, weakening the prince even more. Yifan tries to struggle, to shot fire back at the enemy, but it has come to Joonmyun's realization that the dragon has reached its limit, indeed.

The dragon rider gets on to his feet, not able doing anything but pray for his dragon's survival. If there is anything he couldn't handle, it's the loss of his partner.

"No, no, no, no--" Joonmyun chants as the enemy decides that Yifan is too weak to even continue their fight. Then the black body collides into Yifan's red one. What comes after that slices Joonmyun's heart into pieces. Yifan free falls into the burning forest, without resistance because Joonmyun knows his body has shut down. "Yifan!" He shouts as the dragon disappears. But Yifan doesn't answer him.

The burning forest is too hot, and Yifan is too deep in there. All Joonmyun could think of is how to save his partner. He looks around, water from the river should help, but how?

There's a painful groan coming from the forest that has Joonmyun almost running straight away into the fire if Chanyeol isn't suddenly there to hold him back. He looks at the sky, more dragons has come, Chanyeol must have arrived a while ago.

"Don't go there." Chanyeol warns him.

"But Yifan is there, hurting. I can't let him." Joonmyun shakes his head.

"I know, but if you go, you will be hurt too. We can't risk having a hurting pair of a dragon and its rider. Just wait for the rescue team, Yifan is a strong dragon." Chanyeol's grip tightens on his shoulder. "You have to trust him, Joonmyun."

Joonmyun shrugs, eyes still fixated on the dancing fire that is covering the forest.

"It fucking hurts, Joonmyun, you don't have a slightest idea!" Yifan barks. They are back at the training field, it is the time to test the dragon's wings back after Yixing healed the mostly burnt pair of wings. The fact that they are in the training field, something Yifan's hasn't ever touched even from the first day he found out that he was a dragon, is interestingly more humiliating than the fact that he fell into burning trees.

"I know," Joonmyun answers shortly, his hand keeps stroking Yifan's side to calm down the dragon. "Try again, flap your wings, feel the air around you--"

"I know how to fly, okay." The dragon snaps, baring his teeth. "It's just-- Oh, Merlin, I just can’t." He wails, switching into his human form and curls up into a ball. Joonmyun's heart clenches at the sight. The taller man has always looked so strong, composed, and calm; to watch him crumbling into pieces breaks Joonmyun's heart in so many ways.

"Hey, it's okay. It's okay." Joonmyun puts his arms around the prince's body, pulling Yifan's head to rest on his chest. The prince seems to have calmed down by now. He is breathing steadily, huffing hot air on Joonmyun's chest.

They fall into silence just like that. It is so easy when it is just Kim Joonmyun comforting his lover, Wu Yifan, not a Rider supporting his Dragon or a servant consoling his Prince. The roles they have to put when they are not alone makes a heavy burden to their shoulders.

Joonmyun sighs as Yifan presses up light kisses on his exposed collarbone. He tightens his arms around the blonde prince, wishing how they could be even closer even now there's no gap to separate them. It is just never close enough for him.

"I'm afraid, Joonmyun." Yifan whispers, his breath ghosting over the rider's sensitive neck. "I have failed my father, I have failed everyone. I have failed you."

"Sshh," Joonmyun leans down and kisses Yifan's hair, then he trails down his lips to Yifan's forehead, "You didn't fail your father," down to Yifan's tip of nose, "You didn't fail anyone," and down to Yifan's lips. "You especially did not fail me," he whispers before his lips meet Yifan's. He lets the other taking the lead, lets his lower lip to be caught between the prince's lips. The kiss is lazy, not too sweet and not too heated. They pull apart when it is becoming too hard for them to breathe.

"I want to fly, Joonmyun. I want to be able to fly with you again," he confesses.

Joonmyun smiles. "Me too. Let's get you familiar with your wings again, and then you will have us flying so high until we forget about everything but ourselves."

Yifan nods. Joonmyun retreats back to give him space for his transformation. He looks up proudly to his now-in-a-dragon-form boyfriend. There is a new shine in Yifan's eyes, and Joonmyun knows it's from his confidence.

"Okay, back to lesson one. Wings, up!"
