On the way to lunch today, I almost fell on the ground laughing. As we walked out of Teague, we heard sirens getting closer and eventually saw the first police car come around Main towards us. There were about three or four police cars, a fire truck, and an ambulance, all coming as fast as they could.
Instead of going on around the bend and heading towards George Bush Drive, they rushed up to the gate and stopped, lights flashing and sirens going. The CSPD police car in the lead rolled down their window and slid their card through the card reader. The gate went up. The police car went through. The arm went back down. A second police car rushed up to the gate and stopped. They rolled down their window and swipped their card. The gate went up. They went through. The gate went down. The fire truck rushed up to the gate. They slid their card through. The gate went up. The fire truck went through. The gate came down.
Keep in mind that there are two gates with arms here. All of the emergancy vehicles were going through in a single line.
At this point, I'm staring at them and openly laughing. If I had thought my cell phone could have taken a decent picture, I'd have used it. I should have anyway.
Eventually, it came time for the ambulance to get through the gate. After realizing they couldn't get the gate to go up, the non-driver paramedic got out and pushed the gate arm up enough to let the ambulance through. The ambulance went through. By this point, a physical plant truck had arrived, but the guy was pretty much just standing there with nothing to do.
After the paramedic let the gate down, the gate started going up and down, up, down, ....
A few minutes later, with us standing there agape at the gate as it swung up and down, a Bryan fire truck came around with its siren going. Instead of trying to go through the chopping gate, it stopped at the other one and the physical plant guy carded them in.
After we got back from lunch, it was stuck open and an orange cone was there to make sure no emergancy vehicles could get in without a pass.
They had to go through a second gate before they could get where they were going. Some policemen think they need to rush from one closed gate to the next closed gate, especially when there's already someone in front of them waiting to get through the next gate.
