Movies are good when they're good

It is NOT circular. It's not. Wrap your head around it. Come on.

Ah whatever, it makes no sense to me either.

Smokin` Aces was good. So was Pan's Labyrinth. In different ways, of course, but they were both still very good.

Hot.

The movie, promoted as bieng this super-ultraviolent assassinfest really wasn't as violent as I was expecting. You could maybe call it Sin City on light tranquilizers. I dunno. The general feel of the movie wasn't that violent. I think back about it and it actually was, but the way it was structured, it didn't seem so. Big surprise in the movie is how good of an actor Ryan Reynolds is. It's definitely a long way from Van Wilder and Waiting, but he handled it very well. I would even say that he gave the best performance of the movie. The twist at the end is significant and pretty engaging. There really isn't much foreshadowing to it, so I doubt you would pick up on it beforehand. As a dark comedy, somewhat in the vain of Crank (another good one, but I would say Crank was actually better at what it did) it was functional. Characters were a bit shallow, but the movie was still fun.

A really fancy poster.

Believe it or not, I'd say this movie was more violent than Smokin` Aces. More of a plot, better character development of course. I just was not expecting the violence. I imagine it had more to do with me hardly knowing anything about the movie before I saw it. Still, really quite good. The movie was in Spanish, and it makes me kind of proud to see that it's in the top ten at the box office despite the fact that it's subbed. (Side note: it's very impressive when the person you go with uses super lingual powers to go through the movie sans subtitles.) I think it shows that America maybe, just maybe, is becoming slightly less stupid and idiotic in their aversion to anything foreign. The girl who plays the main character, Ofelia, does a wonderful job and is surrounded by an equally strong supporting cast.

So those were the movies I saw, in succession, on Saturday night. In summation, I would reccomend both.

I was thinking about something on the car ride up to school: fences are ugly.

Seriously, they are. And most of the time, the purpose they serve is negligible at best. For instance, we drove past an artificial pond that had been presumably dug to raise the property value of the surrounding housing development. There was a fence around the pond. It was a short fence, maybe 3, 4 feet tall. One of those ugly wire ones you see around tennis courts and stuff (not to say that not all fences are ugly, these just especially so). The only purpose it seemed to serve was to provide a safe haven for weeds from evil gardeners. The overall ugliness is compounded by these dark thorny weeds all along the fence. A fence that could be hopped by anyone with legs. I dunno. I don't like fences. Especially when they don't serve a purpose. Even wooden pickets. In a few years, the paint's gone off them and they're covered in fungus.

Walls, on the other hand, I'm fine with. It's no symbolic thing about people separating themselves and all that. I'm all for that. I just don't like fences. They're never any good. Walls can be decent, pleasing even. I like the type of wall that's just a bunch of unmortared stones stuck together. I just think it's cool.

And a quick note about the music I'm listening to. It's this giant album project put together by a bunch of collaborators at OCRemix.org. They put together this great album of remixes from most, if not all, of the songs from the great games Sonic 3, Sonic and Knuckles, and Sonic 3 and Knuckles.

The Icecap Zone remix is a bit sub-par, but the Sky Sanctuary remix makes up for it. Flying Battery isn't half bad, either.
