So. I finished watching Geass on New Year's Eve and I've been completely obsessive over it. Like, reading every fic I can. In my stupid enthusiasm, I signed myself up to
30smiles so uh. Here's my first Code Geass fic.
Title: Home is Where the Heart Is
Pairing(s): Suzaku x Lelouch
Rating: G
Word Count: 1,917
Notes: I like writing child!Lelouch. There are parts here that are written in romanji, that would represent Japanese. Otherwise, everything is in English. For the beginning of the fic, assume Lelouch is speaking English, and Suzaku is speaking Japanese. As the story progresses, that would change, but I think it should be obvious enough what language they're using. ^^;
Oh, and I'm more than certain they're all OOC. :D Somuchfail.D:
Summary: Lelouch's first few weeks in Japan. Culture shock. Language barriers. And yet Japan feels more like home than the castle's he's lived in since he was born.
They were sent to Japan with only their necessities packed in two meager suitcases and a stern attendant hired for the sole purpose of delivering the two vi Britannia children safely to their new home. Throughout the plane ride, Lelouch paid no attention to anyone other than her young sister, drugged up on morphine and sleeping pills to ensure her condition- though safe for travel- remained stable. The slight boy never left the slumbering girl’s side, save for when he needed the washroom. He refused to do anything but watch his sister.
“Young master, she may be fed by an IV tube, but you are not. At least eat the pasta.” The attendant reasoned, worried for the young prince’s health- he had not eaten since the night prior leaving Britannia.
Giving the attendant a quick rude glance, he obliged and took two forkfuls of the spaghetti on his plate before declaring his hunger’s satisfaction and pushed the plate aside.
The rest of the flight continued in suffocating silence.
--
Japan and Britannia was as different as night and day. For the second time in too close an interval, Lelouch felt completely helpless- he could neither read the signs nor ask for directions. And begrudgingly, he was thankful for their attendant, who somehow knew her way around the island, and understood the language.
--
She was called to return before completely fulfilling her duty. Standing before a high alcove of stairs, Lelouch smiled confidently at their helper.
“This is where we’re staying right?” He inquired already knowing the answer. He heaved Nunnally further up his back from her slipping position.
“Yes, just above those stairs is your new home.”
“Then teach me how to introduce Nunnally and I. We would be fine on our own after.”
“I am touched by the offer, young master, but I cannot…” She paused, shocked at the expression on Lelouch’s face. Then she smiled. “Of course, your Majesty. Listen closely…”
--
Japanese sounded a lot like trickling water or warm honey- fluid and smooth yet strong and authoritative. And he wonders why such a euphonic language wasn’t taught in Britannia.
--
The midday sun was incredibly strong and the heat was enough to make Lelouch sick, even if he was climbing under the shade cast by the surrounding trees. But Nunnally was beginning to wake from the drugs’ effects. Without further regard for his tired legs and body, Lelouch quickened his pace.
--
“We don’t want you here, you Brit-shit!”
Lelouch couldn’t understand those words, but he was certain by the tone and expression of the boy that it was something terribly mean and hurtful.
The first memory Kururugi Suzaku had of Lelouch was of a slight, dark hair boy, sweaty from exercise, carrying a small girl on his back and amethyst eyes darkened by his incredibly, beautifully angry glare.
--
“I’m sorry about what I said earlier,” Suzaku admitted after hearing the story from his grandfather. He took a seat beside the Britannian prince who was pointedly ignoring him. He held out his hand as a gesture of his sentiments.
After a moment, the prince took it, accepting the apology with a small smile.
--
Fish, eggs, carrots and rice, the Japanese diet was something Lelouch decided he could never get used to.
--
“Boku no namae wa Lelouch desu,” Lelouch said to Suzaku after breakfast. He grinned when the boy’s green eyes widened in shock at how the Britannian knew Japanese. “Soshite, kanojo wa boku no imouto desu. Nunnally desu”
“Hajimemashite, “Suzaku responded hesitantly.
At the boy’s surprised expression, Lelouch laughed.
--
Suzaku pointed at a bird flying overhead. “Tori.”
Lelouch smiled and nodded, showing he understood. “Bird.”
--
When Lelouch wasn’t with Suzaku, he was with his sister in her room. Being alone with her was something he was used to, but somehow the presence of another in the room was strangely comforting too.
“Nunnally, this is Suzaku Kururugi. Ah, but in Japan, they say their last names first, so it’s Kururugi Suzaku.”
She reached out a hand, which Suzaku promptly held. “Suzaku, “she greeted happily.
“It’s nice to meet you, Nunnally,” Suzaku replied in English.
--
Britannia boys were really weak, Suzaku decided during his first hike with Lelouch. The hill that Suzaku could easily jog up was a challenge for Lelouch just to walk up and Suzaku’s already lost count of how many times the smaller boy had tripped on rocks or protruding tree roots.
But then night had set and the two boys were still in the depths of the forest overlooking the Kururugi’s portion of the beach. Everywhere the boys turned were trees and Lelouch followed Suzaku in his desperate search for a way out faithfully. Soon, Suzaku couldn’t even see his outstretched hand.
A summer breeze swept by rustling the leaves, an owl hooted from a distance away and Suzaku was fighting the urge to cry when he felt a firm hand wrapping around his own. Under the shroud of darkness, Suzaku couldn’t see Lelouch’s smirk, but he could definitely imagine it as he dragged him towards the right. As they got further away from the heart of the forest, more light greeted them and faintly, Suzaku could see Lelouch’s head tilted towards the starry sky. ‘Of course!’
Britannia boys were weak as ever, but damn if they weren’t smart.
--
Lelouch stared at his reflection in the mirror with a small smile. He rather liked his appearance in traditional Japanese clothing. The yukata was comfortable and infinitely simpler and easier to wear than shirts and pants. There was the sound of wheels rolling over hardwood and Lelouch’s smile turned loving when he saw how adorable such garb made his dear Nunnally look.
Suzaku too looked dashing, Lelouch thought. In an odd way, the Kururugis were like the royalty of Japan. As the Prime Minister, Mr. Kururugi was somewhat the King of the island, and Suzaku would be the prince. That was how he looked in his dark blue yukata- somehow, Suzaku looked princely.
--
He’s never seen so many people in one place in such a haphazard manner, but it was rather nice. The crowd was anything but threatening and the booths all sold incredibly interesting things.
“And this is dango, Lelouch!” Suzaku explained, brandishing a stick spearing three balls of dough in pale colours.
“Dango?” Lelouch repeated, staring at the three balls quizzically.
Smiling, Suzaku held the stick before his friend and told him to bite a ball off, like eating a skewer of meat. Obliging, Lelouch bit off a light green one and chewed.
“Good, right?” Suzaku remarked, chewing his own ball. He grinned when Lelouch nodded and gave him the remaining dango on the stick.
Lelouch accepted the offer. Japanese food, he’s decided, was something he could get used to after all.
--
“Your obi is coming loose,” Lelouch commented, giving Suzaku a sidelong glance. Before Suzaku could retie his sash, Lelouch was already kneeling down, long fingers working deftly away.
--
“Suzaku?” Lelouch asked when the Japanese boy stalled. It was getting really late now and the needed to meet up with the Kururugis and Nunnally soon.
“It’s beautiful,” Suzaku muttered, transfixed at a watch in a glass case on display in a booth. The watch was European styled, with a rectangular face and a brown leather strap. The numbers were Roman numerals painted gold on a white background. It was also extremely expensive.
“You want it, don’t you Suzaku?”
“We don’t have enough money, Lelouch” Suzaku replied, tearing his attention away from the watch.
Lelouch smiled and walked into the booth. “I know.”
--
He was rather proud of his Japanese.
--
“Brother, guess what I’ve been doing today?”
“What is it Nunnally?” Lelouch asked, kneeling so he was at his sister’s height on the chair. He held her hand firmly.
“But you have to promise to keep it a secret!”
“Of course.”
“I’ve been baking cookies!”
“Whatever for?”
“It’s Suzaku-san’s birthday today, did you forget, Brother? Kururugi-san taught me how to bake his favourite cookies!”
A moment of silence. He never told me. “That’s great, Nunnally. I’m sure he’ll love them.”
--
Maps, Lelouch realized, were useless when he couldn’t read. But he could at least ask for directions now.
--
“Nunnally, Mom, have you seen Lelouch anywhere?”
“Isn’t he playing with you, Suzaku?”
“No, I had lessons with Dad.”
“Ah, I remember Brother was looking for something in his room!”
“And he did ask to see a map of Tokyo…”
--
Even though he was a prince, Lelouch had never carried so much money with him in his life. Suddenly, everyone looked a bit more suspicious and he felt a bit more vulnerable.
Lelouch quickened his pace, thankful for those hikes he’s had with Suzaku.
--
The bus, he was riding the bus for the first time in his life. And it was in Japan, of all places.
“Next stop is Ginza.” A generic female voice reported through the sound system. (1)
He was riding the bus for the first time and he knew exactly where he was going.
--
The sun was setting and Suzaku still remained at his spot at the top of the steps to the shrine.
“Stupid Lelouch! What if something happened to you?!”
--
Lelouch grinned, fingers in his pocket caressing the watch Suzaku saw two days ago. He was glad he asked the booth owner if there was a store he could go when the festival was over.
“The next stop is Yoyogi Park.” (2)
--
The walk from the bus stop to the shrine was rather taxing. And the sun was setting. Lelouch shivered and hurried onwards. He didn’t want to be out on his own at night.
--
Suzaku didn’t see Lelouch until the smaller boy was two steps away. He jolted up and wrapped his arms around him when he was at the top. “Oh thank god you’re back! I was so worried!” Suzaku declared, sniffling.
“Were you?” Lelouch asked, teasingly, returning the action. He’s forgotten how cold he was until he felt Suzaku’s body heat enveloping him.
“Dad, Mom, Grandpa and Nunnally too. Dad was calling the police a while back to keep a watch for you!”
“But I only went out for a bit!”
“You could’ve been lost, kidnapped or worse, killed!”
“Please, have some more faith in me.”
Suzaku let go of Lelouch, rubbed his eyes and glared. “At least apologize.”
Sighing, Lelouch complied. “I’m sorry I caused you, Nunnally and your family to worry. But I had a perfectly legitimate reason.”
“Which was?”
“Well…” Lelouch began, and then looked away from his friend, glad that it was dark because Suzaku would’ve never stopped teasing him if he saw the blush on his cheeks. “I wanted to get you this.”
Suzaku took the item in Lelouch’s outstretched hand and realized it was the watch. “How did you--?”
“I asked the booth owner where his store was that night. And the money was something our attendant gave us in case of emergency. We still have plenty, don’t worry.”
“But why?”
“It’s your birthday present, stupid. Ah! I was supposed to say ‘Happy birthday’ when I gave you the watch, shoot. Or what was it again…Ah. Otanjoubi omedetou!”
A silence and Lelouch began to worry. ‘You’re not tearing up, are you?”
“Shut up, Lelouch.”
The Britannia prince smiled. “Tadaima. “ He whispered, barely audible. It was the first time he’s said it.
FIN
1. Ginza is one of the shopping districts in Tokyo.
2. Yoyogi Park is where the Meiji Shrine is located. I'm going to say the Kururugi shrine is there instead.
