I apologize deeply for this entry

On occasion, you will hear me -- or sometimes calamityjon -- talk about the "ten percenter joke". What this refers to is a joke whose referent or subject is so obscure, whose humor is so contingent on an arcane cultural or social or linguistic idea, that only ten percent of its readers have a chance of understanding it, let alone enjoying it. I have amended ( Read more... )

I think I'm kinda funny, but people who think they're funny are usually 100% wrong.

Y'know, I don't think that's true at all. Certainly many unfunny people are under the delusion that they're funny. But pretty much every funny person I've ever known has been aware that they're funny.

Also, hi, & I'm here from the "99 problems" post. {waves}

Hi there!

The ratio of unfunny people to funny people I have heard use the phrase "I'm funny" is about 6,424:1. But maybe that's just me.

Almost everybody thinks they're funny. But the funniest guy in the world is Aaron Sorkin.

Seriously, seriously, you're awfully goddam funny and you work the comedy awfully goddam well.

I - a total stranger - wouldn't visit this site damn near every day if I thought you were just some unfunny smarty-pants hack working the names of semioticians into your comedy in order to prove how brainy you are.

Don't go changin'.

Seconded. My husband regularly giggles himself into incomprehensibility while reading your posts at me.

I concur with mrwomack up there. Also, I like your jokes that are hella obscure, whether or not I get them; you're so skilled that even the form of the joke makes me laugh. The "Fur" one I about half-got (having never heard of Dorothy Wiggin or Reed Waller), which made me feel smart, I got to look up the parts I didn't get, which made me feel smarter, and despite the delay between when I heard it and when I fully got it, it was still funny. That's no small feat, my friend.
