Why listen to the Allman Brothers?

For me, it has always been about Duane. To a lesser extent, it's about Dickey. In any other band, Dickey Betts would be awesome, but he's kinda second fiddle behind Duane. Why listen to the Allman Brothers? Why would you not? God, Duane was the best! It's nice to see him mentioned here, too. And the old songs are still great, so I guess it's not surprising that people still want to hear 'em ( ... )

Yeah, Duane was the best. But he's been gone since I was 3, and the band goes on. I'm less and less sure it should, though.

I'm reminded of Allen Steele's Orbital Decay where there's mention of the Dead going on when half the band's replaced by young kids and the other half is replaced by cybernetics. I'm seeing ABB going that way (perhaps not the cybernetics part) and I'm not sure I like it. I'm seeing two great players punching the tar-baby of nostalgia and I don't know that they'll be able to get their new music out.

(I have The Word, which is NMAS backing Robert Randolph on gospel tunes, but not much else. I should get more.)
