I saw the Davinci Code on Friday. I can only hope that the book has a completely different premise, and thus avoided the fatally flawed logic of the movie. Otherwise, there is no excuse for it to have been a bestseller. I refuse to believe that the public is really THAT stupid. I also don't see why religious groups are making such a big deal of it. Perhaps it's because stupid people will believe anything, including bad fiction, and that stupid people who will believe anything are the base of aforementioned religious groups. Seriously:
1. Even if someone could prove by DNA that they were related to Mary Magdeline, how would that bring the Church down? The Church claims that Mary was a whore, and it's no great feat to be related to a whore who worked before the advent of effective birth control. Being realated to Mary Magdeline in no way proves relation to Jesus.
2. Who would believe that the body they had was even Mary Magdeline? What proof did they have other than secret records no one outside the group knew about? Seems like it would have been an easy case to say the records were inaccurate/falsified.
3. I seriously doubt that DNA testing could even tell if someone was a direct descendent of anyone who lived 2000 years ago. With normal paternity tests there is still a reasonable amount of error, esp. if the other paternal candidate is the guy's brother/father or something. Could one really prove that one was born of the children of Mary Magdeline? instead of just her brother/cousin/etc?
4. The Catholic church has also gotten very good at saying it was mistaken. "Sorry about that whole earth being the center of the universe thing..." That Jesus had children wouldn't really devistate the church. It also doesn't prove that he wasn't divine. Hell, he was born to a human mother, and he's still considered divine. I see no reason why this divine being couldn't have had children as well. This, assuming there was even a way to prove Jesus was the father.
Summary: The Davinci Code, in movie form, has about the worst premise of all time. Is it any different in the book? God, I hope so.
