“I loved my gift, Booth” she said, looking at the small figures of him and Parker outside.
“Merry Christmas, Bones” it was all he could say, feeling his throat clenching slightly, looking at the window where she was, through the thin layer of snow that was falling from the sky.
Millions of things crossed her mind within the seconds that he stood there and there wasn’t much she could say to tell him how she felt; for the first time in a long time, he had managed to drive her speechless and, although it was a good thing, Brennan was not used to feel the way she did right now. She was not used to this overwhelming feeling that she could put in front of her and disssect when it happened to others but it was hard to deal with when it happened to her. How could she do it, when there were only one gesture to simplify it?
Brennan disappeared from the window and turned off the cellphone, so fast Both didn’t have time to say his goodbyes and just stared with a interrogative frown, looking at the window and, then, to Parker. The little boy had the similar expression of confusion of his dad’s and, aparently, the same as the ones inside the trailler, for they looked at the door’s direction.
It was faster than Booth could react and Brennan was outside, running in their direction in the snow.
“Dad, it’s Bones!”, Parker said, cheerful.
Booth couldn’t say anything, he was slighlty stuck for a moment, not knowing what to do, if he should move or say anything.
She stopped in front of them, breathing raggedly, facing Booth, a smile on her flushed face, trying to recover her breath before speaking.
“Hi,” she said, under his dubfounded eyes.
“Bones, what...”
Brennan pulled him into her arms, enveloping him in a tight hug, still trying to catch her breathing; by now she knew it wasn’t because of the run, but it was because of him. Brennan was breathless and speechless because of Booth and it felt wild.
“Thank you,” she whispered to his ear and kissed his cheek. Brennan peppered his cheek with kisses, her body still closely pressed to his.
Her kisses evolved to small pecks to open-mouthed wet kisses, from his cheek to the rest of his face, his forehead, his eyes, his chin and even his nose. And when she stopped to look in his eyes, knowing exaclty that he could see what she was feeling through hers, he whispered back to her.
“You’re welcome.”
The feeling of their kiss under the mistletoe came to her mind; the mix of the sweet and stinging taste of the minty gum with his own particular, unmistakenly male and unmistakenly Booth would haunt her for some time now, against her will and better judgment. But the truth is that Brennan wanted to taste it again. She longed for it, although she had only realized it right now, that his lips were so close to hers that she could feel his breath against her, hot and familiar, cutting through the icy snow. She took another plunge and kissed him on the lips, opening her mouth to his and closing her eyes, forgetting for a moment that Parker was by their side and that they probably had an audience from the window.
It lasted longer than they expected and less than what they wanted, although it was enough to render them breathless. She smiled when they parted, stepping away from him and his embrace, her mouth reddish and slightly swollen, sparkling blue eyes, cheeks still flushed and messy hair; she looked so beautiful, he thought, like an angel.
Brennan bent to kiss Parker’s cheeks and, with no further words, she glanced again at Booth before returning inside, as fast as she had arrived there.
“I think she liked the present, dad!” Parker said, still cheerful.
“Yeah, I think she did, buddy.” Booth whispered, never breaking the gaze at the window.
