All Through The Night
Then she put the box with the evidences in the storage room. She felt relieved, in peace, for finally giving some closure to the ones that once loved that girl.
There were so many to count, so many faces, so many names and so many different, yet horrible and sad, stories. Things she had to deal in her daily life and it all made her feel miserable.
Lily walked slowly back to the office to meet her co-workers. The thought of seeing them again brought a smile to her face, even though the day was horrible, even when everything around was horrible, she would have her buddies. The guys that never treated her as if she was inferior for being a woman, on the contrary, they treated her with respect and care for her being a woman. Lily was already grinning by the time she reached the office.
"The guys are going out for a drink, wanna join, Lil?" said Scotty, in a joyful tone of voice.
"I'm tired, I think I'm going straight home to sleep."
"Come on, Lil', let's cheer up the mood, this case has been tough, we should have some fun now."
She pondered for a while. Scotty seemed so happy with the idea of going out for a drink that she didn't had the courage to say no.
"Ok, I'll join you guys."
"Great!" he said, a little boy's smile breaking on his face. Lily grinned back at him and allowed him to put the hand at the small of her back to lead her out. Another protective habit of her partner, one little thing he did so frequently and neither of them didn't even notice that anymore.
The bar was just two blocks from the office and it was crowded at that time. Lots of people talking and laughing in a dark, heavy and smoky-scented room, music blaring out loud from some old juke box. Vera found a table, hidden somewhere near the counter, that she missed because it was still too dark for her eyes to see it. In fact, if it wasn't Scotty leading her, she would probably be lost somewhere near the entrance, where a couple of guys wouldn't be looking at her the way they were if they knew she had a gun. Lily nodded her head and scoffed inaudibly in the noisy place.
"I think I'm too old for this kind of music," Jeffries said "I wonder how these kids can keep going and going all through the night with this noise they call music."
"They call is rap, Jeffries." Scotty replied "And it's not that bad, that song is just lousy."
"I didn't know you were into rap, Scotty." Lily said, amused with the new information. Her partner shrugged and smiled apologetically to her.
That was when she realized how little she knew about her partner. She never asked anything because she didn't want to answer any questions regarding her life. She didn't had much to say, her domestic life was pretty normal, but questions about her past would bother her. And she avoided that so intently that it was pretty clear to the boys she didn't want to talk about that without being asked before.
She smiled when Scotty put a mug of beer in front of her. He clinked his glass to hers, making a toast, before taking a huge gulp of his own beer, looking at her. Lily did the same, her eyes at him for a few seconds before she moved it away. The crowd of people dancing in front of them was almost hypnotic for her. Then she met a familiar face, a face that looked disturbed and out of place there. It was Kite.
Lily's jaw almost dropped to the floor. What was he doing there, of all places?
"Lily, Scott," he said, approaching them.
"Kite, man, what are you doing here?"
"I was looking for some friends and look who I find here! How are you, guys?"
"Fine... I could never picture in a place like this, Kite. Who would imagine."
"I could say the same thing about you, Rush. Who could imagine, eh?"
She nodded and lowered her head, her attention now turning to the beer in her hands. Scotty felt the awkwardness between them right away.
"So, I... I'd better get going, my friend must be waiting for me."
"Ok. Nice seeing you here, Kite," she said.
"You too."
He left quickly, without looking back. Scotty's eyes followed him until he was out of sight in the middle of the crowd.
"Things didn't end well, huh?" he said, turning his attention back to Lily
"Do they ever?"
"I guess not."
"And you and Elisa, how are you?"
"You know, we'll learn how to deal with it."
"Yeah, I guess there is no choice."
The loud thud of the music was starting to drive her crazy. Lily took another gulp of her beer, finishing it off.
"Another one?"
"Yes, please. And then I'll get out of here."
"Aw, no! It's too early, Lil'!"
"Yeah, that's why. I wanna go before my eardrums explode."
Scotty laughed and ordered two more beers, that arrived fast. They repeated the toasting and drank it happily, the cold drink going down smoothly their throats. They were silent, a comfortable silence, the kind of silence one have with a good, close friend.
Lily took a glance at Vera and Jeffries, both entertained in a joyful conversation. She smiled, looking at them.
"We should come here more often," said Scotty, loudly so she could hear him.
"You think so?"
"Yeah, it's fun when we see each other outside the working environment."
Lily nodded, taking one final gulp of her drink, putting it back on the counter. Scotty did the same.
"I'm going now, Scotty, I'm tired," she waved to the other guys, who waved back at her, and turned to Scotty again.
"Ok, Lil', I'll walk you home."
"You don't have to, really."
He leaned in her direction to speak "I need an excuse to leave here too."
Lily smiled, nodding. They walked to the exit, quickly, avoiding the crowd or people entering and dancing. Within seconds they were outside, breathing in the cold fresh air of the Philadelphia night.
"Maybe I'm too old for that kind of place," She said.
"Nah, I'm sure you're not. This is not a good place, of course it would be Vera's choice."
She snorted "Vera's choice? Yeah, right."
"Yeah! If I had chosen the place..."
"Scotty, I'm sure you're the one that came up with the idea and picked the place."
"Well..." he shrugged, pretending to be ashamed.
They continue walking slowly down the street. A few couples walking by them, kissing, holding hands, some even fighting. Sometimes Lily cursed herself for the way things went so wrongly with Kite, maybe it was her fault, for being so obsessed with her work. But, still, when working in her position, how could anyone blame her for acting like that?
She sighed, putting her hands into her pockets.
"I just realized I've never been to you house," He said.
"Only a few people have been there. I can't say I'm a good hostess."
"Yeah, but..." Scotty started, not sure if he wanted to continue. He wanted, indeed, to ask her a few things, but he wasn't sure he was ready for her reply.
Lily looked at him, waiting for him to continue.
"Don't you ever feel lonely? God knows I feel most of that time."
"Yeah, well.. of course. But differently than you, I don't feel the need to be surrounded by men." She winked.
"Oh, lord, me neither!"
Lily laughed "Sorry, women."
Scotty paused for a second, looking at her with a naughty expression.
"What?"
"Oh, Rush, don't you give me ideas."
"Scotty!" she said, waving her hand to his directions.
Within minutes they arrived at her doorstep. Both stopped, looking at each other. She felt a warm feeling inside her, although she wasn't sure of what that meant, maybe that was because Scotty was closer to her than the usual, he even climbed a step so he would be closer to her.
"So, I guess that's goodnight, then," he said, not realizing he was now staring at her lips.
"Yeah. Good night, Scotty, see you tomorrow."
"See you."
But she didn't move, not only after a few seconds. And when she did it, he held her by the wrist, pulling her closer to him for a soft kiss, their lips brushing tenderly. Lily closed her eyes, letting his tongue open her mouth to kiss her further, searching for her own until he found it. They kissed for a minute or so, under the cold air of the night, their bodies apart besides from their mouths.
She pulled away and opened her eyes, finding his eyes staring back at her, sleepy.
"Good night, Lil', sweet dreams."
"Good night," she said before he turned to leave. She smiled faintly, watching him go. Now she was pretty sure se wouldn't feel lonely, at least not that night. She would have something to make her feel warm and content. Something to think about, all through the night.
