All Those Perfect Little Things

"And in the night I could be helpless
I could be lonely, sleeping without you
And in the day everything's complex
There's nothing simple when I'm not around you

But I miss you when you're gone.
That is what I do
And it's going to carry on
That is what I knew

Hold on to my hand,
I feel me sinking, sinking without you
And to my mind everything's stinking
Stinking without you"

(The Cranberries - When you're Gone)

It felt right from the first second. From the moment their lips touched she knew how right it was and how silly they both were for postponing it for so long. When Luke ranted about how he felt stupid for trying to date a woman that was already taken, she was totally taken aback by his reaction. Maybe it was something she didn't even expected, seeing him losing his temper like that, or maybe she felt taken aback by the sincerity of his words and the hint of relief for finally letting her know how he felt. She felt the same for such a long, long time, from the tiny stab of jealousy when he told her he was dating Nicole to the anger rising deep inside when she found out they had married, until he told her that he was living with her. In spite of dating other man, she knew deep inside what she really wanted, but was too scared to try or even admit it to herself.

Lorelai stood still, her mouth slightly open, when Luke left her to ran after Kirk, that was naked with a pillow for some odd reason she didn't even cared to consider right now. That was too much for her mind to process, she had kissed Luke, the taste of his mouth, the feel of his hands holding her close and still, so masculine and yet so delicate. He held her like a precious porcelain doll or like one of those fishing assets she knew he loved so much. Not that was a weird comparison, but realizing how he cared about her, all the tenderness he felt for her kind of startled her. She felt a heat wave taking her body, spreading slowly and suddenly all she wanted to do was laugh and giggle like a little girl. Like she would do if she could only find Rory right now. She wanted to run upstairs and wake her up, tell her that she had just kissed Luke. No, that he had just kissed her. That it was mutual, that she had finally understood why she was so jealous, why she couldn't settle with a man for a long time. She was taken, indeed, as Luke said, but she was taken by him, since she didn't even remembered.

Lorelai grinned, muffling a squeal while jumping up and down lightly, suddenly realizing what she was doing. Why the hell she was feeling like a teen girl once again? She didn't feel that with Max, she didn't feel that with Jason, maybe something close to that with Christopher, but not even close to the way her knees would go weak when she brought to her mind the image of Luke staring at her minutes before leaning to kiss her.

She turned to go back into the Inn when she met Jason halfway. He looked at her as if she was wearing a clown outfit or something.

"What?" she asked, half-smiling.

"What's going on?"

"Nothing, why do you ask?"

"You look so... so giddy, what did I miss?"

"Nothing, I'm just... I'm happy about the Inn, nothing exploded and the horses didn't invaded the dining room as I was fearing."

He looked intently at her, her face was flushed and she looked slightly breathless and embarrassed. She, actually, didn't expected to meet him there.

"Where's Duke?"

"Luke, his name is Luke. And I don't know, he went after Kirk."

"Went after Kirk?"

"The social disabled guy that went running down the stairs screaming and naked? That's Kirk."

"Oh, so that's what happened. I was wondering what..."

"Look, Jason," Lorelai interrupted him "I know why you're here but you need to know that there's nothing to talk about, we're done. I'm so sorry, but we can't go on."

"Lorelai, if this is about me suing your father..."

"No, it has nothing to do with it. Well, actually it does, but we can't."

"What if I drop it? Would you even consider?"

"Jason..." she said, sympathetic "I can't, I'm..."

"Please, Lorelai..."

"There's someone else, Jason."

At this moment Luke entered the Inn. He stopped in the middle of the entrance when he saw they both standing there, near the seat Jason had spent the whole night. Lorelai looked at him like a deer caught in the headlight.

"He was near the stables, scaring the horses."

"What the hell happened?"

"You know, he... well, it's Kirk, we don't try to understand, we simply accept it." Luke said, making a gesture with his hand. He looked at Jason, who looked at Lorelai who simply didn't know what to do.

That was one of the most awkward moments of her life. Lorelai didn't want to hurt Jason, but she didn't want to go through all that with Luke again. And she also didn't want to tell Jason that she wanted him to leave to make out with Luke a little bit more. But he seemed to get the hint as he looked at both of them.

"I... I think I'm going now."

"There's a spare room, Jason, you don't have to hit the road this late."

"No, that's ok. I just wanted to see you and talk, but... well, I guess we've talked enough." Jason turned and, on his way out, padded Luke's shoulder "Nice seeing you again, Duke." And left.

Both Luke and Lorelai stood still, listening to the sound of his steps creaking the sand and little rocks all the way to his cars, and to its engine starting and he leaving the Inn. Only when they couldn't hear the sound of his car anymore, Lorelai risked a glance at Luke.

"That was a busy night, uh?" she said.

"Yeah." Luke said, staring at his own shoes "Why did he called me Duke?"

"Well, he..."

And there it was again. All the nervousness was back to her, once again she was uncertain of what to do or say next, of whether or not take the next step. All she wanted to do now was kiss him again, to be enveloped by his arms once more and forget about time. She looked at him, meeting his intense gaze, so warm and open to her that suddenly it made the fear disappear. It was the same look she had seen before, when she was sad and he talked her into laugh again, when she had a problem and he helped her figure out a way to resolve it or just when she said one of those flirtatious jokes of hers and he responded in a way only his. Sometimes grumpy, sometimes playful, but always with the same warmth in his eyes.

She grew too serious and walked in his direction, closing the distance between them until she was mere inches from him, until she could touch him. Lorelai rose her hand to touch his stubbly cheek, caressing him lightly, never breaking the gaze. And that was when she knew she was taken; she was taken by him since long ago. It took his bold moves to ask her out to make her realize that and she was deeply thankful for it. Luke pulled her by the waist for another kiss and suddenly the world went spinning, everything seemed perfect and shiny, the colors and lights around them seemed to be brighter and blurred.

His tongue entered her mouth in a hurry, rushing for some kind of reassurance, as if she might fade away any minute, desperately kissing her and pulling her against his body. He kneaded her waist, sliding his hands up and down her back until he felt breathless and had to part the kiss, staring at her with a tiny smile. Lorelai, on the other hand, had the biggest of the grins, playing with his hair.

"You know, you were right." She spoke, softly.

"About what?"

"About me being taken. I am."

Lorelai didn't remembered ever seeing him smiling like that, so bright and so beautiful, it was like a light was spotted at him. He looked at her through his long lowered lashes and leaned to kiss her again, this time a soft, slow kiss, he was taking his time to know her, to find a pace along with her, to just get lost in the scent from her hair, from her skin, to get lost in her pretty blue eyes as she looked at him, so tenderly he thought he could melt right away. She was all those perfect little things people say in movies, all those perfect little details, perfect in her smooth silky skin, in her soft kisses.

The kiss turned into soft pecks and she leaned her forehead against his, catching her breath.

"Me too" he whispered, hoarsely.

"What?"

"I'm taken too."

Lorelai smiled and kissed him lightly again, moving to his jaw and planting small kisses to his neck.

"I have to go now. See you tomorrow?"

"Yeah."

"Goodnight, then"

She untangled herself from his arms and went to the stairs, climbing it, looking at him while she did. Luke watched her disappear with his heart jumping in his chest and a giddy feeling. Weird thing for a man who never giggled, who rarely laughed out loud. But there was these things about Lorelai that made him feel all goofy and happy when she was around. All those things about her, her sense of humor, her laughter, her witness, her relationship with her daughter, the way she treated everybody in that city. All those perfect little things that made him fall madly in love with her.
