Pairing: Sam and Kara
Summary: Set at some vague time in the future when life in the fleet is a little better. Sam and Kara have a small daughter and twin sons.
Evie ran to meet Sam at the entrance to the day care section, pleased to be rescued.
"Daddy!" she squealed, hugging his leg. "See my picture?" She held out a smudged drawing that sort of looked like Vipers in a row.
"I see," he said, smiling as he leaned down to scoop her up. "Have you been good today, baby-girl?"
Evie frowned and thought it over, her little forehead wrinkled. "Guess so?" she said, with a cute little shrug that was identical to her mother's movement.
She put her arms around Sam's neck. "Home?"
Since Lee had picked up the boys earlier for a treat, Sam was free to take Evie on his own. "Home," he confirmed, turning and heading down the hall. "Do you want to hear about my day, Evie?"
She nodded eagerly with her curls bouncing. "Daddy fix things," she said cheerfully, waving at the people they passed.
"Uh-huh," he agreed. "I fixed two vipers and a raptor, 'course, I had help. Then your mom and I had lunch and then she went off and flew."
Sam carefully edited out the part where they'd ended up frakking like newly-weds in the supply room. This whole having kids thing was definitely changing their sex lives. "And then I fixed more things."
"Vroom, vroom," Evie said loudly at the mention of Vipers and her mama. "Vroom-Daddy make Vips go!"
She drummed her feet against Sam's side and announced, "Wanna see!"
"No, home," Sam told her, laughing.
"NO!" Evie said firmly, her expression almost identical to her mama's stubborn look. Sam carried her on anyway and, after a moment, she tugged at his collar.
"Hungry," she told him.
"I should hope you are, it's almost dinner time." Dodging a group of marines, Sam paused to watch them jog past.
"No babies?" Evie asked, watching as well and waving excitedly at one of the younger soldiers who was a friend of her parents.
"No babies," he confirmed, amused at her, "just you and me and your mama."
Evie crowed with delight and kissed his cheek. She wiggled out of his arms as soon as they entered their quarters and made a beeline for the small toy area the children shared. "Blocks!" she demanded of Sam excitedly, pulling out the container. She liked to watch him build towers and then smash them over. It was a game her brothers often spoiled for her.
"Blocks, huh?" Sam said. He glanced at his watch and then hunkered down on the floor with her. "All right, but only until your mom gets home."
"Kay," Evie said agreeably. She poured the blocks out in a big mess all over the deck and stretched out on her stomach to start building, bossily telling Sam what to do as he helped sort them. They spent several minutes building and sorting, until there was a nice-sized tower.
Pleased, Sam looked at Evie, "Now we're Admiral of the tower, huh?"
"Queen Evie!" the little girl told him with a giggle. "Silly Daddy." She grinned at him and rocked back and forth on her stomach. "Smash now?"
Sam heaved a large sigh, "I suppose, if you must."
"Don't wanna? Smash fun!" Evie said. She scrambled up and snuggled against his side, offering very generously, "Daddy can smash?"
Hiding his face in the bend of his arm, Sam heaved another sigh. "What if it would break my heart, Evie?"
Making a puzzled noise, Evie patted his shoulder clumsily. "Daddy--no--no sad," she said hopefully.
"But you want to smash the tower," he accused, manufacturing a sniffle. He figured it was a good thing Kara wasn't there to catch him.
"Smash fun!" Evie declared with frustration. She hugged his neck and shook her head. "Daddy! Don't cry--not 'low’d!"
Managing a louder sniffle, that continued, Sam mumbled, "I know you think it's fun, Evie. But sometimes, I want the towers to stay towers."
"Nooo," Evie whined, frustrated and worried about her daddy. "No cryin', Daddy!" She clung to him, trying to be comforting and Kara walked in just in time to hear him fake sobbing. With a big grin, she shut the hatch quietly and crept over, holding her finger to her mouth to show Evie to be quiet.
"I-I'll try not to," Sam sniffled again, managing a hiccupping noise that almost set him off laughing.
"Brave daddy! Evie smash. You see--be fun," the little girl coaxed, patting his back.
Kara sank down on his other side and kissed his cheek. "Awww, Sammy, having a bad day?" she purred, her voice shaking with suppressed laughter.
Whoops. Suppressing another laugh, Sam turned his head just enough to brush Kara's lips with his own, "Day's getting better and better, baby," he whispered before he sighed and said, "I guess you can smash it now, Evie."
Kara chuckled and kissed him back. "Our daughter tormenting you, huh?" she said, stroking his hair and leaning against his side.
Evie frowned and watched them closely. "No cry?" she demanded of Sam.
"No crying," Sam confirmed, worming his hand up the back of Kara's shirt where Evie couldn't see.
"Think she smells a rat, Sammy," Kara teased, curling closer to him and arching against his hand.
Evie grumbled and sat down in Sam's lap, wiggling to be almost a wedge. "Daddy trick!" she declared, pouting.
Hooking an arm around Evie, Sam kept her from shoving him and Kara apart, "I have to be tricky, baby-girl."
Both his girls gave him identical puzzled looks. "Why?" Evie demanded.
" 'Cause you and your mom are so smart," he replied. Gods. One of these days, Kara was going to punch him for being so cheesy.,
Kara laughed and kissed his cheek. "Good one," she told him.
Evie kept frowning and said, "Smash fun! Bad Daddy." She wiggled up and went to consider how best to knock down the tower.
"You won't mind if your mom and I kiss while you're doing that?" Sam asked. He managed a half-sniff, "It would make me happy."
"Kay," Evie said reluctantly with a big sigh. She added another block to the top of the tower.
Surprised that his request had worked, Sam eyed his daughter suspiciously, before turning to look at Kara, "That is, of course, if you mother doesn't mind kissing me. She might be tired of me, after all."
"Naw, not yet," Kara teased him. Under her breath, she added, "Better hurry before she gets the tower down in about five seconds and stops being distracted!"
"Yessir," he whispered before kissing her, his free hand coming up to tangle fingers through her hair. Gods, he loved this woman more than he'd ever thought possible, and some days, he woke up terrified they would die or she'd leave him and she never did.
Kara's arms went around his neck and she clung to him as they kissed, pleased to be home with her family. "Uhmm, I need a back rub and food," she told him, nuzzling her face against his. "How was your day?"
"Boring, except for that middle bit at lunch," he murmured, tugging her shirt up a little and stroking her back.
"Weird, lunch was the best part of my day too," Kara said, tickling the skin at the nape of his neck in return. "Boys still with Lee?"
"Mhmm..." Sam opened an eye to glance towards Evie, having learned that when small children are quiet, there's danger. He wondered if he could find someone to take Evie for them.
Evie was poking at the blocks with a laser burner pen her parents used to make repairs, using it as a lever and her pudgy fingers were about to press down the trigger.
It took Sam a moment to realize what she had, and then he moved, catching the end and pointing it towards the wall as she squeezed the trigger. "Let go, Evie," he said, voice calm while he tried not to think what could have happened if she'd touched the wrong end to her skin. The smell of charred wood began filling the air.
Evie whined in anger and twisted her hand in Sam's firm grip. Giving in, she let go and the tool clicked off. "Daddy, gimmee!" she demanded.
"No." Sam said, his tone firm as he gave her a very serious look. "This is one of our tools, Evie. You're not to play with it, do you understand me?"
"No," Evie said crossly, "want it! Makes lights!" She pouted and grabbed for it in Sam's hand.
"Shit," Kara sighed behind him.
"Evie, it's dangerous. You are not supposed to play with it." Sam said, still speaking sternly. He held the pen over his shoulder out of Evie's reach, so where Kara could retrieve it and put it away. "You could get very very hurt, Evelyn."
Evie fussed and jumped as her mother put the pen on a high shelf. "Want, want!" she squealed. "Need tools, fix like you, Daddy!"
"You have to have lots of ttraining and be older, Evelyn." Sam reached out and touched her head, "I'm serious about this. I want you to promise not to play with our tools."
Evie pouted and sighed and then nodded. "Kay, Daddy," she said slowly, putting her thumb in her mouth.
Kara came back over and joined Sam. "Daddy's right," she told her daughter firmly. "Don't do that again, missy!"
"I don't want just an 'ok', Evie. I want a promise," Sam said firmly.
Slightly intimidated, Evie looked down at the deck and nodded slowly. "Promise," she said clearly.
Kara frowned and shook her head. "What'd you think?" she asked Sam.
"Thank you, Evie," Sam said softly. He pulled her in against his chest and hugged her, then turned and leaned his forehead against Kara's, including her in the hug and whispered in her ear. "You don't want to know what I was thinking."
"Oh? I just meant, think she means it?" Kara said softly, hugging them back.
Evie sighed heavily and clung to Sam. "Sorry," she offered almost timidly compared to her usual irrepressible attitude.
"I think she does," he replied just as quietly.
"Gonna be good? Hungry?" Kara asked Evie, who gave her mother a hopeful smile and nodded. "Maybe if we're lucky, Dad will feed us. Give him a sad look," she added, stroking Evie's curls.
"Ganging up on me again?" Sam demaned with a grin.
"Would we do that?" Kara teased and then kissed Sam, taking her time.
They totally would, but Kara's mouth on his was rather robbing his ability to think clearly, or retort with any accuracy. Or maybe he was hungry; he decided a moment later as his stomach growled.
Evie giggled and patted his stomach. "Daddy's tummy talking," she said, holding up her arms to be picked up.
"Daddy better make dinner then, huh?" Sam chuckled.
"Yup, Mama's not gonna," Kara said with a smirk. She patted Sam's ass and added, "I'll make it up to you later though!"
She picked up Evie and carried her over to the blocks. "Let's build another one."
Chuckling, Sam moved to start dinner. Spaghetti was about the limit of the supplies they had right now. So it was spaghetti he constructed, all the while thinking of ways to tuck Evie to sleep so he and Kara could have a blissful night's sleep. If they slept, that is.
Kara was eager to be alone with Sam as well, so she did her best to amuse Evie with lots of active play while Sam cooked. The little girl was tired and yawning when it was time to eat. Kara carried her to the table and sat her on her lap.
Dishing out food, Sam eyed Evie, then tried not to pay her any special attention as he chatted with Kara about the day and the schedule for the next few weeks.
Kara kept up her end of the conversation and feed herself and Evie. She smiled at Sam and squeezed his hand. "Gods, I dunno how we ended up like this," she teased him.
"I suckered you with my looks and charm," Sam replied cheerfully.
"Yeah, cause you have so much of those," Kara teased, grinning at him. "Naw, it was your t-o-u-n-g-e and what you can do with it!"
Evie giggled at the tone of their banter and pushed away the spoon her mother was offering her, in favor of snuggling against her chest and closing her eyes.
Sam waggled said appendage at his hot wife, then tucked it back behind his lips and replied cheerfully, "You're only saying that so I'll take the opportunity to use it on you."
"Maybe, if you're lucky," Kara purred, flicking her own tongue at him. She finished her pasta and pushed back from the table, rocking Evie.
Clearing the dishes, Sam stopped behind her chair and leaned down to nuzzle the side of her neck, "I'm always lucky, baby."
"Not as lucky as me," Kara said with a grin. "Think she's out! I've got plans for you, Sammy." She rose with Evie carefully balanced in her arms.
"Where are you going to put her, so those plans can come to fruition?" Sam asked softly.
“Her bed? Dumb ass," Kara said with a snort. She headed over to the toddler’s bed and pulled Evie's nightie out from under her pillow.
"You sure we won't wake her up?" Sam asked.
Busy undressing Evie and getting her nightie on, Kara shook her head. "We haven't so far," she pointed out. "It'd be nice if the kids had their own room though, huh?"
It would be. Sam had to agree with her there. He rinsed their dishes and scraped the last few bits of food into the trash before rinsing the pot, too.
Kara tucked Evie in and rose. With a yawn, she stretched and dimmed the lights. Going over to their bed, she undressed and lay down. "Hurry up, Sam, I'm about to doze off," she teased.
"You are, huh?" Sam stripped down and leaned over her, leering in the dim light. "Guess I should just put myself to bed, then, huh?"
"I guess," Kara said with a grin. She leaned forward and kissed him slowly. "Or I could put you to bed," she breathed.
"Yeah?" kissing her back teasingly, Sam reached to cup her breast. "You all hot and bothered for me, baby?"
"Always, all day long, every day," Kara told him, tugging him down beside her and tangling her legs with his as she kissed him eagerly.
"Good. I'd be worried if I was the only one horny." Sam replied, caressing her. She laughed and responded and talking was soon the last thing on either of their minds.
*Another Evening Later On*
Evie came over to Sam where he was sitting at the table and hugged his calf, content for the moment not to be picked up. "Whatcha doing, Daddy?" she asked, since she couldn't see up to the table. The twins were playing with blocks in their crib and Kara had left their quarters on an errand.
Glad for the interruption, Sam looked down at her, half-smiling, "Paperwork, baby-girl. What're you doin'?"
Evie frowned, unsure what that was, but sure it didn't sound interesting. "BORED!" she told him rolling her eyes. "Play wi'h me." She tugged on his pants as she begged.
"Aw, Evie," Sam sighed and scooped her up, tucking her under his chin, facing the table. He gestured at the papers on the table, "I have to finish this before I can play."
Evie regarded the papers with a scornful frown. "BOO," she complained loudly. Reaching out, she shoved several into new piles. "All done!" she announced, her expression melting into a sunny smile.
Sam choked on a laugh, shoking his head, "It's not that easy, Evie. I have to read them and make sure the numbers tally, see?" He pulled one out of her new piles and scanned down the column, initialing at the bottom.
Evie watched closely and picked up one of the extra pencils laying on the table. "Evie do!" she demanded, scribbling rapidly on another paper in squiggles and swoops.
Kara came back in the hatch and Evie looked up at her. "He'ping!" she crowed. Her mother grinned in amusement as she saw what she was doing.
The cargo manifest was now covered in pencil. Sam sighed and shifted Evie so she couldn't write on the paperwork, "That was nice, Evie, but I think I better do these on my own, ok?"
He eyed the squiggles, and wished they had paints and crayons and construction paper for her to draw on. Sometimes, being a ragtag fleet with little hope seemed really awful when the children were hurt by what they didn't have.
"He'ping?" Evie protested uncertainly. She blinked at Sam, her lower lip starting to stick out. Kara came over and rubbed Sam's shoulders in silent support, looking down at them.
"You are helping," Sam assured her, "by being here. But Chief might be worried a Cylon did these if I'm not the one to sign 'em, ok?"
With a little squeak of dismay at the word Cylon, Evie hid her face against Sam's chest. She was playfully trying to amuse her parents.
Kara laughed and kissed Sam's cheek. "Having fun?" she asked him. "Got a lot more to do?"
Laughing, Sam hooked his arm around Kara's waist and tugged her onto his lap as he scooted the chair back to accommodate her. He settled Evie on her lap and hugged them both.
"I'm having a blast, but don't tell Chief that, he might give me another stack to do," he joked.
Kara slung an arm around his shoulders and kissed him again as her other arm went around Evie. "Oh yeah, that'd be bad," she joked.
Evie squealed and struggled to stand up on Kara's lap. "Evie sitted on Da's lap!" she fussed.
"Aw. Don't you love your mama's lap, too, Evie?" Sam asked, making a face at her. He only had about six more papers to go. He was willing to play a little hooky for a few minutes.
"You don't wanna make Mama cry, do you Evie?" Kara asked, widening her eyes.
Evie frowned suspiciously. "Mama not cry," she protested. "Mama big girl! Want Da!" She wiggled in Kara's grip, who turned her face into Sam's shoulder and made loud sobbing noises to Evie's astonishment.
Choking on his laughter, Sam gave Evie a solemn look. "Your mama does cry, Evie."
Bewildered, Evie stopped squirming and started at Kara. She patted her experimentally on the shoulder. "No cry?" she demanded. "Make Mama stop!" she told Sam.
Sam sighed, "I think you have to tell her you love her, Evie. Otherwise, she might cry for hours."
Kara sniffled even louder and brought up her hand to the side of he mouth to hide that she wanted to laugh.
With a heavy sigh, Evie patted her clumsily. "Do love Mama," she said firmly. "Love Da lots, but Mama nice!"
Kara groaned and bit Sam's neck. "See!" she said, laughing a bit. "You've turned her against me!"
"Oh, I have not, woman," Sam teased. "You're just over-wrought. I'm sure a stack of paperwork would put you to rights."
Kara lifted her face and wiped at her eyes dramatically. "I love you, Evie," she said, sticking out her lower lip.
Evie hugged her. "Silly Mama! No cry," she said bossily. "He'p, Da!"
"I love you, mama," Sam said agreeably.
Evie giggled and patted Sam's cheek. "Dadda smart!" she praised him.
Kara snorted with laughter. "Oh my gods, she's SUCH a daddy's girl. It's kinda sickening," she said.
"Can she help it? I'm awesome," Sam replied. Kara groaned as Evie cheered and nodded eagerly. The tickling that followed delayed Sam’s paperwork, but they all had fun.
