Earth Hour

Last night we did our part to celebrate Earth Human Hour by turning on all the lights inside and outside the house, as well as burning as many candles as we could find (to make our carbon foot-print that much bigger). We also indulged in the modern luxury of delivery pizza and wings, ensuring that at least one business was doing it's part to make money by providing a service that was unthinkable before the advent of electricity, phones and cars!

My friend Jenn did a beautifully eloquent job of explaining why Human Hour is a far better thing to celebrate than Earth Hour. I was going to write more, but there is no need now.

Here's a snippet:

The human mind, human ingenuity, is the only thing that can improve our lives here on our planet. Humans created candles and kerosene lamps and electric light bulbs and nuclear power. Humans will continue to improve upon existing technology and humans will benefit from it. Turning off your lights for an hour will not improve a thing, but symbolizes a willingness to return to the caveman days, as if living the short, violent lives of our ancestors is a goal we should strive for.

The only thing I can add is this line of poetry from Dylan Thomas: "Do not go gentle into that good night. Rage, rage against the dying of the light."
