Friday night I worked midnight shift at the shelter (yay extra monies!), yesterday I went to the movies and then came home and devoured two movies from my Powell/Loy collection ("Manhattan Melodrama," which I haven't seen in a good 20 years, and "Evelyn Prentice," which I have never seen, but which was fab, because, come on, it's William Powell and Myrna Loy). today it was beautiful out, and I woke up at 11, so I decided to go see Pacey die.
I do try to see Canadian movies if they're playing anywhere near me, and the tiny theatre in Kingston has been showing "One Week" for the last while, so I decided not to wait for it to hit Belleville and go. I'd seen the trailer several times, so I kind of knew what it was about - Josh Jackson gets a cancer diagnosis and hits the road for a Canadian roadtrip, kisses the Stanley Cup, learns stuff, etc. and, that was pretty much what happened, but oh. what a deliciously Canadian movie. it was really a love song to the open road, and to the sort of road trips that everyone should take at least once in their lives, preferably not with a death sentence hanging over their heads.
I really enjoyed it, because I really really do adore and love my country, and because let's face it, Joshua Jackson is actually charming enough to carry an entire movie. there was some great scenery and some great music (I am going to have "Un Canadien Errant" in my head for at least a week, and I haven't sang that song since I was about 9), and some touching moments - thankfully, with some good laughs in them. and, I always forget that Campbell Scott is half-Canadian.
it made me really want to take a road trip - not just a quick jaunt to Ottawa or Toronto, but a _real_ road trip. I really have got to take that trip to Nova Scotia one of these summers, before I die.
then I took the back roads home, drove slowly and just enjoyed the beautiful weather. I stopped in Avriltown and got some groceries and some plants, then came home, threw in some laundry so I have something to wear to work this week, and then made up some veal and brie burgers to put on the Foreman (mmmmmmmm). now I'm sitting here in the living room watching the sun drifting down towards the horizon and admiring my new plants - I have yellow, red, and pink mini roses, a bouquet of pinky-purple tulips in a vase, white and pink and purple violets, pink and green elephant's ears, pink and red kolanchoe, ivy climbing all over, and my diefenbachia are growing like mad. my Prepara is sprouting chives and thyme and dill and tomato plants, and even my Christmas pointsettia is healthy and lush.
it definitely feels like spring.
