I feel like I should be doing something productive, but it's a little late to start packing, and that is my big hurdle for the week. I actually have new to report, so this sounds like a good time for an LJ entry. I had started to look for a job as a waitress or hostess, but I had a voicemail when I got out of class yesterday..."so-and-so from Six Flags Darien Lake. I received your application today and would like to talk to you." I filled out that application the day after the auditions, which were a month ago! I talked to someone today, and it turns out they want me to be a "High Profile Character Actor" in the park this summer. Basically, we'll create a character based on my strengths, and I'll serve as basically a source of park info/street performer. They want to give me 40 hours a week, and it sounds like I can work my schedule to allow me to do a show at night, so I can at least audition for Shakespeare. Yes, it is about half an hour away, but I know at least 2 other people work there this summer, so carpooling shall be arranged. The $8.50 an hour is a pay cut from what I make in the department, but actually more per hour than I've ever made doing research. I'm not surprised that this is what they're offering me. They really liked my improv, and the 2 shows require specific types of talent. The indoor show needs strong jazz dancers, the outdoor show is country singers, and I'm a ballerina who sings musical theatre. I know it isn’t a famous park or "serious" acting, but I'm slightly baffled by the fact that someone wants to pay me to act all summer. There were two goals I had for this summer: 1) to get a job that has nothing to do with science or medicine (I need a mental break) and 2) to get paid to perform. Moral of the story is I'm excited, and I plan on having fun with it because August 7 is going to come really quickly!
Anyone have any suggestions for a character? I got a lot of compliments on my "fairy-like movement" during Midsummer. Other than that, I tend to play bitchy characters. I'd like to work some singing and dancing in there...I wonder if my science background could fit in somehow? We're going to have a workshop in a few weeks and they will help us, but the creative part is where I lack a bit (character development is fun).
While I'm asking for suggestions, I need one more piece to work on in voice. I'm open to all styles and genres at this point. The Gilbert and Sullivan piece I had has some funky chromatics and is long/too much of a pain to learn for something that doesn't challenge me at all technically. As of now, I have "How Could I Know?" from Secret Garden, "Where Or When" from Babes in Arms, and an Italian aria ("Les Violettes"). She tends to not be a fan of any of the contemporary musical theatre I bring in, and since I have stuff for opera to worry about, too, short and easy to learn is key. I have "Come Rain or Come Shine" that I wanted to work on, but I think its too similar stylistically to Rogers and Hart.
Things may also be looking up in other areas...stay tuned for details...
