More thoughts on California

I really need to brush up on my Spanish.

I locked myself out of my room this morning. I asked one of the cleaning staff members in the hall if they had a master key to let me back in. She smiled very politely at me and just shook her head, saying, in Spanish, that she doesn't speak English. I motioned to the door and the electronic slot for my key. She smiled and handed me foam coffee cups and asked, in Spanish, how many I wanted. "Uno," I said. She smiled and gave me two, with a wink. "Gracias," I said.

Needless to say, I had to get a new key. At least I got a free copy of the Merc News while I was there.

The weather? While the bottom part of the state is frying, it's about 72 here and delishly sunny. Everyone keeps commenting on my Chuck Taylors... I guess they don't wear them off the basketball court here?

The vending machines sell cell phones and trail mix. Pepsi is the preferred brand. The Mexican dishes are some of the best I've ever had, and I still don't know what I ate. Short of a margarita and available granola at this very minute, this place is soooo California.

I'm sure my apartment is hot and stuffy back at home. Bah.
