CHARACTER NAME: Amamiya Kazuhiko / Nishizono Shinji

SERIES: MPD-Psycho (Multiple Personality Detective - Psycho)
[As a note, this wikipedia article is probably the most complete canon information source I'm able to give, and it's very much incomplete. It also takes points of the storyline from the TV mini-series, which has little to do with the manga plot line outside of the names of characters.]

CANON POINT: End of chapter, where Shinji scuffles with Miwa over possession of the Kazuhiko program in his mind on a hijacked plane of now-dead passengers that's in a sharp descent toward a not-so-smooth crash landing.

AGE: Approximately 30.

APPEARANCE: Kazuhiko and Shinji look like just about any normal Japanese male. He's taller than the average, standing at 179cm (5' 10.5''), and obviously underweight at only 59kg (129.8lbs). Black hair, typical Japanese skin tone, with sharp slanted eyes. They tend to be shown as slightly lighter than normal, more of a medium or light brown, versus a dark shade. The only visible difference between the personalities (outside of expression, mannerisms, and clothing style) is that Kazuhiko has to wear glasses, while Shinji does not.

PREVIOUS GAME HISTORY: N/A

PERSONALITY: This character has what is called Dissociative Identity Disorder, more commonly know as Multiple Personality Disorder. None of the active or dormant personalities are what would be considered the "original", or the personality born naturally into their body. That personality is gone. While the dominant, polar personalities of Nishizono Shinji and Amamiya Kazuhiko have been artificially created and implanted, making those an atypical case of DID, the other four, dormant personas were created in a more classic, trauma-based situation, one of which has ceased to exist within the canon. This is all further explained in the History section of the application. Because of the nature of their condition, I will explain each of the major personalities separately in order of prominence.

Amamiya Kazuhiko: Kazuhiko is the most prominent personality, as he is the one who deals with the majority of day-to-day living toward the later years of the canon. His personality first surfaced after the murder of Higashi Shimazu by Nishizono Shinji and the subsequent death of the personality Koboyashi Yosuke, to which he was immediately arrested for the crime that his alternate personality committed. An unspecified [expressed in the canon as a sentence of "X years", and I assume could not be any more than about 8 years] term of sentence was served in a mental facility directly following trial. Toward the later end of those years, a female police officer by the name of Isono Machi often consulted him for pathology advice on serial murder cases for the Metropolitan Police Department. This sequence of events are the foundation of Kazuhiko's personality.

- socially awkward due to limited life experience [spent most of his active life incarcerated]
- has little knowledge of his own basic preferences [as he hasn't been able to experience them]
- behavior around others is based on his knowledge of them and their reception of him [Miwa when he first meets her]
- beginning stages, a man of few words, speaking only about business
- reserved regarding his own emotions; cold, apathetic exterior or distant and listless [has little reaction to witnessing victims of serial killers like the Flowerpot Murderer]
- distant and even defensive when it comes to meeting new people until he's built up a reason to trust them [Sasayama mistaking him for Yosuke]
- blunt and straightforward, without reservations on subjects outside himself [taking Miwa to the police station to meet Machi to confirm identity]
- has dry, cynical humor ["you really are Amamiya Kazuhiko" receives a weak smile]
- except in the event of something like a death, resulting in a polar opposite reaction [save the lives of two young girls who are about to commit suicide]
- personable, charming, and devoted once he becomes comfortable with someone [Machi and cutting his hair, Sasayama "it's like Yosuke's back"]
- secretive and sensitive about his condition [rarely talks about himself, save to certain people]
- becomes tense and often avoids speaking about it when mentioned [quickly changes the subject, brushing off with tense humor]
- strong self of differential between himself and the other personalities [speaking to the court "I am not Koboyashi Yosuke"]
- however an unease as to who he is in the world ["I am Amamiya Kazuhiko, but who am I?"]
- identity issues [the entire point of his work changes from solving serial murders, to piecing together the puzzle of Lucy Monostone]
- curious by nature and devotes himself completely to finding answers [only one point where he diverges from his search for answers]
- puts understanding of others before his own safety [meeting with Toguchi to find out why rather than worrying about his safety]
- grows increasingly suspicious of others as the series progresses [especially after Toguchi]
- strong human heart and selflessness [as the series progresses, he does more and more to help others at risk to himself]
- strong belief in the justice system [doesn't speak out against his jail sentence, only his mistaken identity]
- highly intelligent [understands human emotion and pathology without any noted formal schooling]
- brilliant criminal profiler; strength in pathology [earned premature release into Machi's custody because of work to aid the police department]
- prefers to work alone, concentrates heavily when working [most research scenes are just him, and he's stunned when Miwa's watching him once]
- when he is in a group, he allows others to take the lead [ie Machi]
- embodies the charisma of Lucy Monostone
- is farsighted and wears glasses
