Today my company had a boat party and we sailed along the coast at Newport. We were on a boat called "Endless Dream," and being on the thing made me remember how beautiful some parts of the California coastline really are. One thing that struck me as being amazing was that we sailed past small group of houses that had their own private beaches that would be on the equivalent of their front lawns, in the Balboa / Laguna areas.
Also, it was funny how we wound up sizing up all of the other yachts to see if our yacht was more impressive than theirs. Silly, considering that most of us wouldn't have even had a case of yacht envy just before we boarded the boat.
The founders of the company also extended invitations to several former employees, many of whom I had worked with for the first couple of months when I was starting. It was good to see them all again, and it's also good to see that they're all doing very well for themselves nowadays. They were all smart people, so it wasn't surprising. Still, it makes me realize that I've been at this company for quite a while now. In a couple of months, I'll have been here for a year. I feel like I've learned a lot, but at the same time I feel like there's so much more that I still haven't learned.
July has been a really busy month, with moving and training the new people in my department. August looks to be about the same...my business trip to the east coast should finally be happening later this week. It'll be my first time to Boston and NY, and I'm really looking forward to it.
