Today I spent a few hours at West Rock just around the lake, taking photos, mostly of Odonata (I need to get a good field guide) and Lepidoptera. I'll have a lot of IDing to do after I get the film developed. I saw a fair number of what I think are Least Skippers. At least the one or two I played hide-and-seek with in the grasses at the water's edge were; the ones in the dry meadow may have been Europeans. I also chased after some bright orange moths, roughly the same size and color. Many Eastern Tailed Blues, most likely a Pearl Crescent, a few Peck's Skippers, and a Duskywing round up the smaller butterflies. I saw a (?)spicebush swallowtail, but only in flight, a male tiger, several monarchs, and two or three Buckeyes. The last were exciting as I haven't seen any in years (wrong place, wrong time). I saw joe pye weed and ironweed in bloom, and an abundance of queen anne's lace and flowering legumes.
I also dragged along my 4x5 and took one photo of a leafy riparian scene. I'm looking forward to see how the day's photographic endeavors turn out, if I haven't fried the film.
On the way home, I stopped at a farm and bought some produce. I still can't get over being within 15 minutes of both town and country.
Yesterday I went to a free screening of Much Ado About Nothing. What a great play and movie. I love Emma Thompson as Beatrice, and I think I have learned to appreciate her character a little more in the years since I last saw the film.
Friday I had dinner with
chlomar at a new Indian restaurant, Thali. It was very special; the food was great, but nothing to compare to the pleasure of sharing a leisurely meal with a good friend.
