I don't want to make commenting on the news something I do too often. But some things bear mentioning, especially when you know it will impact everyone.
This week, Antarctica hit a massive record, during their autumn when things are supposed to be cooling down. Instead, our South Pole was over 70 degrees F higher than normal!
Think about that for a second. Imagine it's normally 60 degrees F on a typical fall day in September and your town hits 120 degrees. That's what we're talking about here. 70 freaking degrees! Several ice shelves collapsed, too. Big ones that they didn't expect to go for at least a decade or more.
Meanwhile, our North Pole wasn't faring so well, either. It's spring on this side of the planet and the Arctic hit 50 degrees higher than normal.
This shit would be a much bigger deal in the news if it wasn't for the Russian war against Ukraine. I get it because of the possibility of nuclear war. However, this weather shit is not going to spare anyone. My gut just sinks when I think about it, so... other than planning for how to stay cool if the electric goes out (I love our house for that!) and removing some deadfall trees in the forest next to our house (which Mike helped out with a LOT this winter) I don't think about it.
I try to comfort myself with the knowledge that if all the ice in the world melts, the oceans will only rise by 300 feet-- that's a lot, but there's plenty of land left. Also, there's a possibility that a feedback loop from freshwater in the Gulf Stream could actually trigger the next Ice Age. We can't know for sure what's going to happen. And there's nothing substantial that any of us can do, we're just along for the crazy ride we're strapped into so long as we're alive.
WHEEEEEEEE!!! =^0
