A BEAR ON OUR PORCH!

I went to bed super early tonight, but was awoken by a thump against my bedroom wall. I got up to check it out because I thought a cat was up to no good. I looked out the window my cat had puffed up and ran away from and...

A big black bear was on our porch! It was standing up to pull the bottom off the bird feeder (and succeeded!) and proceeded

I've run into cougar (in my late teens going to summer camp) but never bear, let alone that close up where I live, so... yeah, kind of surprising!

It was when I was a camp counselor and I ran into a cub (she lost her other one) and she "escorted" me away. I was in the middle of a large forest when that encounter happened. I walked backwards until I went around a bend where she couldn't see me, and turned and RAN like the wind! But she did not pursue, she just wanted me away from her cub.

Believe it or not, I have had a mother deer standing on a hiking path with me, and it scared the s**t out of me! For the first second, I was charmed. Then, she was marching toward me aggressively as her little fawns crossed the path behind her. There was nothing to hide behind around me, and I suddenly knew this beautiful "shy" creature could probably brain me to death if it wanted to fairly quickly.
Wild animals in the flesh, right there in front of you, can be seriously cool but also seriously intimidating!

Yeah... we have mama deer here much of the year, and they've never threatened me. But Mez thought chasing fawns was fun, until he got chased back by their moms. Now he leaves them strictly alone!
