In which Luc has some dire news for Lucretia...
Lucretia sat quietly in the cafe with her usual green tea doing her usual thing - with her nose in a book. Today it was 'Early Grasslands Adventures' by the famed explorer Chajiko. She had just gotten to the part where she had discovered the Chisha village when she looked up at the shadow that was coming through the doorway.
Luc was adorned in his usual attire - his green jacket, his brown shirt, and plain black pants, held together with a lop-sided belt. Though everyone knew that he was the True Wind bearer at this point, he still wore his gloves out of habit, hiding the Rune on his hand that had etched itself into his soul. Luc calmly took a seat across from Lucretia, folding his hands on the table, his youthful, yet emotionless eyes looking into that of the tactician from the south. "I have heard troubling news regarding the Queen Mother of Falena," he said calmly, not even bothering with the formalities of a proper greeting.
Always polite no matter the situation, she smiled placidly and nodded. "Good afternoon to you, Luc. Do tell me what you've heard about Her Majesty?" She picked up her tea and sipped it, her eyes not leaving his face.
Luc nodded briefly, acknowledging her greeting, as to not be entirely rude. She was, after all, Lucretia Merces. "I believe you have heard that she had spoken with a Bishop of Harmonia?" he asked, his voice flat, yet laced with a grave tinge.
Raising an eyebrow, she put the tea down. "I had not."
Luc blinked in surprise. Lucretia hadn't heard? That's... odd. "Tell me... how much have you read about Harmonia's history regarding the Twenty-Seven True Runes?"
"Enough to know that Harmonia has gone through all manner of means fair and foul - a great number foul, I'm afraid - to collect all of the runes for themselves. I've also read that even if the Runes are not in their possession, they are in positions that they can be easily used by them." Lucretia would have said more about it [in fact, she could have explained all afternoon] but something about Luc's urgency told her that he didn't have all afternoon for her explanations.
Luc nodded again. "Good. Then I needn't explain why the High Priest has sent my brother to speak with Her Majesty."
"I see. Have they spoken already or do they have yet to speak?"
"I believe they have spoken already. I have just now received the news from listening to loose talk around the castle, and knew to come straight to you." Luc paused for a moment, taking a quiet, yet deep breath. "You must realize, if the High Priest acquires the Sun Rune, your kingdom will lose both its symbol of sovereignty and its best defense against the legions of Harmonian troops. That is why I have come to speak with you - you know as well as I do that my father has no idea what the Rune is capable of."
"I do, indeed." She went back to sipping her tea. "But tell me, isn't it your wish to see the Runes destroyed? What would you have to gain here?"
Ah, yes, Luc should have expected this question. Lucretia was a genius, afterall. Luc sighed. "My visions have ceased. However, I have come to realize that the premature destruction of the True Runes, and indeed the world, is no better than a world dominated by stagnation and order. To prevent a cancer, one must dispose of the source - and that source is my father, the High Priest." Luc had made his intentions plain. However, that still didn't lessen the threat that Harmonia posed to Falena. "Your kingdom had seen better days to be sure, in its pre-Civil War era. However, if Falena were to be stripped of its power, its monarchy, and its rights, the reign of the Godwins will seem like a vacation. You've no doubt heard that conquered nations of Harmonia are third-class citizens."
Lucretia paused, the blood slowing for a brief second before she regained her composure. "I am painfully aware of that. But you should also be aware that Falena is more than what its symbol represents - the true Falena is its people. Certainly we will do all that we can to protect Her Majesty and to keep any harm from coming to the Sun Rune. However, Harmonia would be sadly mistaken to think that by taking our Rune, that they are taking our spirit, or the hopes of our people away." She motioned to a passing waitperson to bring her another cup of green tea and smiled politely as they left to fill her order. "I can understand Hikusaak's motives, but something tells me that much like previous attempts to capture and control runes he is again underestimating people's will. No rune can truly control [that], True or not."
Luc laughed quietly, and continued. "I believe you have missed my point," he began. "My brother has already met with your queen. If she trusts them, then she has placed all of Falena in jeopardy. I thank the stars that the Child Queen is not here, but if the queen trusts Harmonia, then they are that much closer to their goal." Luc stood up, and turned away for a moment to regain his composure. After a deep breath, the former Bishop turned to her again. "I am offering Falena my assistance. My entire purpose in life as of my resurrection is the defeat of the theocracy, and its megalomania. So long as I draw breath, I will not allow my father to gain any True Rune, especially one as dangerous and powerful as the Sun Rune."
"Then in that, we agree." She looked up at his standing figure and nodded. "I will make myself available to Her Majesty at her earliest convenience. I thank you for your concern." Smiling, she nodded to the waitperson as they set her warm tea down.
Luc nodded in agreement. "See that you do. Farewell, Lucretia." With that, he left the cafe.
