Oh, duh, I'm an idiot. Last week was my waiting week for unemployment, but I stupidly forgot to factor in that the payment I requested today covered THAT week, so no $ yet. Next Monday when I apply, I'll get some cash for this week. In the meantime, I'll still get a paycheck from my job at the end of the week for work I did in June. I realize that since we have such a long gap between working and our paychecks, it's going to be sort of tough on the other side when I'm back to work.
Anyways, I actually got a little worried this weekend, as the top story about this on the Star Tribune has a quote right at the top claiming that if this shut-down stretches into the end of August, it might go all the way to January. That would really, really fuck this state over. The cities all depend on state revenue and don't have that much cash in reserves. We're really screwed when the CITIES run out of money. Businesses that make their living supporting state workers right now are in danger of closing down, like delis and restaurants near state buildings (including a fave of mine, Mai Village). Many restaurants and bars are realizing that they when their licenses for liquor expire, they're going to have to try to run without booze (and probably fail). I have no idea what the laws surrounding this are, but I think it'd be a good idea in the short-term if Mpls restaurants adopted a BYOB policy, like many places in Chicago have. That'd be pretty rad. I didn't even know that existed until I started staying in Chicago frequently.
In personal news, I continue to enjoy myself on my time off. On Saturday, friend Kyle (who just returned from a month in Russia) had a huge dance party, and it was definitely a success. Dancers instantly became completely covered in a film of sweat due to the very high temperatures, but we danced our asses off anyways to a super bangin' track list. There comes a point where a person is just maximum sweaty, and can't get any sweatier. We all reached that point by the second song.
On Sunday, Theresa modified our planned Taco Crawl to just one restaurant- it was too hot to be biking up and down Lake Street- and we spent the rest of the day in her backyard using a kiddy pool, slip'n'slide, and generally terrorizing each other with hoses and water balloons and squirt guns. I laughed my ass off as we all took turns wearing a metal bowl on our heads and getting it sprayed with a high-pressure hose. It made everyone scream from how loud is was, but we just kept doing it. Maybe I was suffering from sunstroke or something by that point, but it was hilarious. I also liked when people took turns singing into a kinked hose like a karaoke microphone, and friend unkinking it at random intervals, causing the singer to get sprayed in the mouth. Yeah yeah, behaving like 5-year-olds, but you had to be there. Later, Cor and I sprawled out at Lazytown later and watched a few Star Trek: TNG episodes with friends. We were all interested in the ones starring Data, because they're so fucking awesome and weird. We were all going nuts trying to figure out smarter ways for Data to be utilized on the Enterprise, and meanwhile everyone's like, "Data, babysit this kid!" or "Data, go dump my boyfriend for me!" And the outfits on that show... I can't handle it.
Today, I'm off to the cabin for a night. R and R, right?
