haunted basement

Trying to post about stuff that isn't just personal struggles or massive photo posts about past fun.

I went to the Haunted Basement, a haunted house set up in the basement of an old soap factory/current art gallery. It's my third year attending. What I like about Haunted Basement is that it is very scary and extreme in some ways, but also just kind of artistic and creative and interesting and pretty different than a typical haunted house.

Last year the exciting parts were that they made each person get into a tiny spinning room ALONE and then deposited you on your own path for a few rooms. It was super terrifying being all alone! The other really extreme part was when the actors shoved everyone into antiques wheelchairs, strapped us in, blindfolded us, and then went racing around, left us in each of our own horror vignettes for uncomfortably long.

Unfortunately, they've toned it down this year. It seemed like the attendees are getting younger as word spreads about how awesome and scary it is (although everyone must be +18 and sign a waiver). The actors weren't allowed to touch us this year. It seemed a lot more typical too, a lot of very standard haunted housey stuff.

SPOILERS: I liked that the whole 6-person group got put into a room that spun. There was a very difficult maze to navigate (I think they actually keep the door out shut and hidden for awhile to keep you wandering longer). There was a fun pitch black portion that forced you to just follow a hose by touch, surrounded by loud whispering and frantic beats and scary ambient sounds. The really artistic piece this year was the Hair Shack, a tiny structure that was completely covered in long, fake hair on the inside that we were forced to walk through (with the sound of flies buzzing loudly around us). There a few dark sections with patterns on the wall, with actors wearing suits that exactly match the print hiding, then running out at us.

The thing is, all the coolest stuff is pretty much stuff they did last year. The one new and VERY annoying thing was that we were ambushed and COVERED with nasty, crushed up popcorn. Like, buckets and buckets of it dumped directly down our shirts, basically. I was warned so I had a hoodie up, but everyone else was extremely displeased (and itchy).
