i went out the other night with this new boy, ryan. he's very sweet, young but sweet. and he is full of interesting thoughts. he told me this parable, which he says is his analogy for life. it's from some Japanese philosopher i have no idea about.
A group of men were walking by a large waterfall one day, when they saw an old man struggling underneath the downpour. Fearing he would drown, the men jumped in the water, but try as they might, they could not reach him. They returned to the shore, beaten and bruised from bashing against the rocks. On the shore they found the old man calmly sitting and observing them.
Out of breath, they asked how it was he, and old man, had managed to escape unscathed, when they had received such a beating.
He told them that rather than fighting the currents, he allowed himself to be taken along, in and out of the waves and around the rocks, and was eventually delivered from the downpour.
I think it's time to stop fighting the current.
