Back to the politics

A bunch of politicians were in Canberra today, so I made the rounds to a variety of offices and said hello to them.  It was the first time I have spoken with them since before the election and there was a lot to rehash and everyone was in a pretty good mood.  Some filled me in on the situation on the ground, some filled me in on how great they were, and everyone seemed pleased to see me.  There were drinks had after work and a very optimistic attitude.

Candidate came to Canberra too, with the news that Thuggy McThuggington is now facing court over the punch up near the end of the campaign with claims and counter claims being made.

And yet it is looking more likely that Labor will continue on in government.  They have the benefit of incumbency and although they are likely to be one seat short of the Coalition, I get the sense that they could only be turfed out if the independents wished to turf them out.  At the moment that doesn't look likely to happen, or at least not now.  So Labor may form a government, but you would have a hard time saying they have won the election.

Dinner was had tonight for the last time in a while with everyone in Chez Canuck together before Malice goes to Europe for most of September.  I was sent home with a variety of cheeses and appetisers from my work function which was a big hit, as was Malice's gnochhi and the apple crumble made by Roxy (or as we are considering dubbing her... Poxy.)

Also, it looks like my next overseas trip is taking shape.  Some of you may already have heard, but in October and November I will be going to America.  Every two years the US State Department brings over young political leaders from various Australian parties to America to observe the elections and learn a few things.  Some friends of mine have done it in the past and found it to be a good experience.  It's too early to say exactly where we will be going, but we will be starting in California and ending up in Washington DC on election night.  I plan to pop across to New York afterwards for a visit (New York was about the first place I was interested in travelling to when I first became interested in travel and I've still not been there) and also up to Canada to visit the family.

Hooray!

politics, dinner, travel
