Torchwood

The Torchwood squee was loud around fandom and I told myself I would not watch. I resisted SGA and I certainly was going to put up a good fight against this one even though I love Doctor Who. Well, all that talk about cannon bisexuality and a hot season finale kiss led me to go back on my word and I don't regret it.

I'm only two episodes in but I already have some thoughts on the characters.

Owen
I thought I'd hate him, but at this point I just dislike him. He's arrogant, but there's some comedy around him that doesn't make him totally unbearable. I have a feeling I will start hating him because I wanted to throttle him during the season finale.

Toshiko
I like her. I haven't seen enough of her to say otherwise. She seems like the type of character who will get a pass in my book no matter what she does.

Ianto
He really does look good in a suit. At the end of the day he's a glorified butler but he does his job with so much style. He won't get a lifetime get out of jail free card from me like Toshiko, but I'll sympathize with him more than I would Owen.

Captain Jack
I have to say that while watching Doctor Who John Barrowman scared me. He looked so much like a Ken doll, like something out of fantasy Hollywood. He was a throwback to all those Golden Age movie stars with square jaws, perfect teeth, and a lack of personality. Neither he or Jack Harkness seemed real to me. So when I heard they were giving Jack Harkness a series I refused to watch. I've already repented for that. John Barrowman no longer scares me, in fact I find him attractive now. It's all because Jack Harkness has changed since Doctor Who. There's something there underneath his pretty boy looks and there's an aura about him that reminds me of the Doctor. He has all these companions but essentially he's alone. It really doesn't help that all his companions disobey his orders and shoot him in the head when they want their own way.

Gwen
I was really setting out to hate her, but I don't, yet. In a meta way I get why she's there. She's the newbie who brings the audience in because she's just as ignorant as we are. We learn about Torchwood as Gwen learns. It really helps that the actress is quite accessible in looks: cute and non-threatening. Plus, she wears sensible shoes.

My only quibble with Gwen is all her talk about humanity and humanizing Torchwood. She can be too wide-eyed and humanistic for my liking. There's some alien killing people and she doesn't want to kill it and is ready to put her life on the line to keep it alive. Give me a break. Sometimes some ugly things have to happen for the greater good. I really do hate the character archetype who is charged with teaching us (the audience and other characters) about love, feelings, and all the other squishy stuff. From their point of view the world is simple, when sometimes it's really not, or at least it's simple in a way they don't like.
