“I heard you said that I was pretty.”
“Er…" It was the only response Dean Thomas could muster. He looked up at Padma Patil, quickly forgetting his Transfiguration notes, quickly forgetting everything.
She was all shiny black hair and brown skin. Dean’s attention lingered on her lips; they were drawn into a beautiful smile. The air around them no longer smelled like old books and ink, but like fresh citrus fruits. She didn’t wear the flowery perfume Parvati seemed to prefer.
“Did you say I was pretty?” Padma asked.
Dean nodded dumbly, ideas for ten thousand paintings flashing through his mind. She had a face for antiquity.
“Well, thank you,” she said, still smiling.
She leaned over and kissed him on the cheek--it would’ve been on his mouth if she’d shifted slightly.
One last smile and she was walking away, Dean’s eyes following her. He still couldn’t speak.
