Fic: 30 in 30 #3 - Breathe

Jan 03, 2010 20:13

Thanks SO VERY MUCH to beyond_wonder for the encouragement! I was really worried this one was too angsty/vague/whatever. I don't know why, but I'm going through a phase where I think everything I write sucks. I'm sure that's not true, though. [EDIT: Title and prompt taken from Anna Nalick song "Breathe (2 am)"]

Title: Breathe
Word Count: 300
Prompt: "I don't love him. Winter just wasn't my season."
Pairing: Dean/Jo, Jo/OMC

The winter Jo turns 28 feels like hell come to Earth. Friends, everywhere, are dropping like flies.

She's holed up with the Winchesters in Canada, just...waiting for him to get there. Lucifer's been making his way north from Death Valley for two months, taking his sweet time. The Canadian Croatoan outbreak had been a diversion, and they all fell for it. Now, the border was lined thick with demons to stop them from going after Lucifer head-on. So they waited; kept trying to break through; and kept getting killed.

The cold wind bites through six layers of clothing and seeps deep in her bones while Jo sits on the roof of Bobby's old tow truck. The cold makes her feel almost alive.

She cringed, thinking of last night. Dean's accusing eyes following her while she gripped Jamie's hand, and tugged him out the door with a soft smile and unmistakable glint in her eye.

It had been a mistake, just like so much of her life was. Dean had been a whopper. And yet, they were both still so willing to punish themselves and each other.

Jo hoped Jamie would take away some of the cold of Dean's ever-present stare. She was wrong. By the time the sweat dried on her body, she was already replaying the last three years of her complicated history with Dean.

Dean came over to straddle the beam of the wheel-lift, sitting with too-forced casualty and sniffing the cold air.

"What do you want, Dean?" Jo asked with the weight of the last three years on her shoulders.

"Not being with you, it's--" he broke off, looking at the gray sky for the answers no one seemed to have. "We were better together than we ever were apart..."

"That doesn't mean it was healthy."

Well? What did you think? This is probably one I will continue...

Thanks for reading!
