Clay and I have two kittens and last night one of them decided she was really a flying squirrel.
Although they are sisters, they look nothing alike. One is all black with incredible long soft hair named Wednesday (as in Adams). The other is a black and white short hair with no tail. She is Natalia. (For she has NoTail)
They were very young when we got them, just 8 weeks, and it took us a long time for them to relax with us, but now they tear around the place as they own it - as proper cats do. But even in the beginning, we noticed that Natalia had a much more exploratory nature. Wednesday only wants to explore her food bowl.
Now, for those who do not know, Clay and I have a loft apartment in illustrious downtown Dalton and we live on the second floor above a business. Our front windows looked rather bare so we purchased lovely window planters to hang from the outside of the building. None of the windows have screens. (The building is a bit over 100 years old.) This is great for the window planters as it allows me to water and care for the plants fairly easily.
So last night, as I planted four o'clocks, morning glories, and sweet pea vines in the window planters, my little rascals were terribly interested no matter how many times I shoo'ed them away. One window was open about 4 inches while I turned to untangle the seedlings I meant to plant. Suddenly, I heard a noise and looked up. All I could see was Wednesday's tail. Turning on the sweetest voice I could, I started asking her to come to me. I assumed she wanted to smell the plants and interesting smells outside but I was fearful of the drop. Finally, she started moving in and I grabbed ahold of her. I closed the window and then looked around for Natalia, my little adventuress, but she was no where to be found. Hoping I wasn't right, I ran downstairs. After some searching, I found her huddled in the doorway of one of the businesses downstairs. She looked pretty freaked out and scared but she let me pick her up and bring her upstairs. Clay and I checked her over pretty well and she was perfectly fine, save for a small scratch near her nose. While I know cats are resilient creatures that leap and jump all the time, I have trouble believing that she could have jumped, or fallen, from the window without injury. It seems she must have leapt to the tree outside the window and then to the ground. Where she promptly said, "Uh...I'm outside...now what?"
Natalia is still checking out the window and trying to figure out if she can do it again, but I'm not as excited by this prospect.
I think, from here on out, I will lock them in a back room when I tend to the flowers. They'll hate it but it will be so much better for my nerves.
