Kagome would do anything to get Miroku and Sango together, even resort to employing western traditions to get them to confess their love.
“Kagome-chan, what are you doing?” Sango stood away from the doorframe Kagome had just pinned the decorated leaf to, blinking up at it with perverse curiosity. Did she even want to know?
“It’s mistletoe! If two people stand under it at the same time, they have to kiss each other. It’s a custom in some places in my time.”
“I… see…” Continuing to eye the green stuff, she said, “Well, I need to wax Hiraikotsu, and it’s inside, so if you’ll excuse me-”
“Now pardon me, ladies.” Miroku swept up from his seated position in a flurry of black from within Kaede’s hut. He made his way toward the door, and Sango stiffened and blushed.

Then they would share a blanket by a dying fire and he’d whisper in her ear and she’d laugh herself to sleep.
Now she wakes up bleary from drink, trying desperately to rub the image of him from her eyes.
Then she’d see him all the time, and he’d had his secrets but he’d shared so much with her anyway.
Now she lives seven divisions down and sees him vicariously through her grumbling captain.
Then he’d touch her shoulder gently and tell her she was beautiful and let’s stay together forever, Rangiku-san.
Now she is beautiful and secure, but he’s never there to tell her that.
She thinks about the difference between Then and Now and knows that she will always regret looking into his eyes when he went away for the final time.
