October 23, 2006. Henry Fonda Theatre. Yo La Tengo.
the front bands were not all that great. but jockeying for position, you stand there anyway 2 hours ahead of time so that when ylt comes, you have a good spot for photos and short movie clips of your favouritie song. if they play your favourite song. there are some who claim that yo la tengo is one of the greatest bands there ever will be. i'm not quite certain about that. they're very idiosyncratic, to be sure. and to my mind, over indulgent with the outros. for someone who has been standing for over 4 hours (i know i stood for more than 10 hours straight for coldplay in coachella. but still...) straight, 3 songs in succession that had what again and again, seemed like a 15 minute outro would grate on even the most loyal of fans' ears. apparently, the band never plays anything twice in one tour. unless they find a way to make it new. Los Angeles was in the last leg of the tour. So i got stuck with a lot of obscure songs and instrumentals. hahaha. I know bands don't want to be whores and just keep on playing their hits. but i would've loved to hear my favourite song. for better or worse, you must also do a little entertaining, right? anyway, that is as far as i will go in chastising yo la tengo. in brief moments of despair, they had answers for me. : ) i am not certain they are part of my list of all time greats. probably not. but they are mindblowingly good. and sometimes, with one fell song, they can make your heart go still.
P.S. can anyone tell me what song that is on the youtube i posted? i took at the gig and fell in love with the song. it is not in the three albums that i have of them.
