Coachella Fezztival 2006

i'm remembering you coachella 2005.

hello coachella 2006

for some reason, this year was not filled with the crazy compunction to get as close as possible to the stage to take that one good shot of each favourite band. this year it was my friends who i couldn't seem to stop taking pictures of. the festival quickly became about discovering new loves like sigur ros, editors, minus the bear, imogen heap, yeah yeah yeahs... i did take a couple of shots of my favourite bands when i had a good spot. which were times that were few and far between. otherwise, for sigur ros, clap your hands say yeah and madonna, i came up empty handed. sorry. check out intriguero's lj for what are probably better pics as soon as they are posted!

i was there for both days of the festival. the desert weather was kinder this year. it wasn't so hot during the day. and it wasn't so cold during the night. we crashed at hickypox's hotel at palm springs ( and had a chance encounter with the red hat ladies).

DAY 1 - watched Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Imogen Heap, Kanye West, Animal Collective, Sigur Ros, Franz Ferdinand and a little Depeche Mode

Clap your hands and say yeah! yeah! weeehoo!

Discovering that Imogen Heap is the voice of Frou Frou was indeed a special treat. We watched her again in Pomona. Oh but i simply love Frou Frou!!!

Sigur Ros was next. I don't have a picture for my lj. dammit. I will say this though: i think i fell in love with sigur ros or something. i dunno. can't stop listening to them. watching Jon Thor Birgisson, with his sharp vampire like teeth and eyes tightly closed, singing to the multitude, with his hair slightly ruffled by the breeze with the sun coming down in the desert. music as it ought to be i thought to myself. larger than life. the crowd grew quiet. none of us could sing the lyrics. or understand it. so we all just chose to stand and listen.

DAY 2 - watched Mates of State, Minus the Bear, Editors, Phoenix, James Blunt (so sue me), Sleater Kinney, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Madonna and a little Massive Attack

the second day begins with a mad football field dash to the gates for mates of state. otherwise, iiyak talaga kami if we miss it. we made it just in time.

kori in a lovely red sun dress. when she tells jason to drink water. he drinks water. i want a boy like that. grin.

jason standing up to sing. never seen that before. i wish wish wish i had that last song in my collection. plis mikey...
mates of state understands. kori and jason know just what to sing to help make your heart feel better.

poor phoenix. the boys from paris showed up in layered clothing in the wilting heat. on top of that Jesus broke his organ. After each song, the band would have a powwow on which song can they play next. they at least got to play Too Young. But Mikey missed out on a live Funky Square dance. That one can't live without Jesus. Anyway, sayang talaga. And the Phoenix boys looked so disappointed. Poor fellows. I love them for trying anyway and for being so gracious.

sleater kinney!!!! galeng! woohoo!

Yeah Yeah Yeahs was coming up. we looked happy enough.

until thousands of people decided they would try to crush us to death by pushing to the front and separate the men from the boys. or in this case quark and tl from mikey and lil from annette.

Hickypox wanted the editors and magic numbers poster. so i jumped out of the car to get one while we were all stuck in slow moving traffic. i had to run in the sand and pass ten cars to get to back to ours. On the way, there were a lot of judgemental dudes heckling me and shouting thief! thief!. Suddenly I see Mikey in his subtle yellow shirt jumping out of the car to grab the bigger and more conspicuous editors ad. The same hecklers yell out: there's another one! thief! thief! i was laughing so hard i had a hard time finishing my last run to the car. Mikey and I both reach the car almost simultaneously. the dudes were probably shocked but not surprised that we both jumped into the same car. hahahaha.

and so ends the adventure with a little recreation of the thievery at Coachella.

allavet!
