London Goodbyes
Kai looked up, smiling slightly with a tinge of sadness. “Hey. Took you long enough. When did you figure out we were gone?” The redhead shook his head, “Never mind. It doesn’t matter. You’re here. Where’s everyone?”
Sighing softly, Kai leaned back on his elbows, legs crossed at the ankles. He was sitting on the steps right in front of the crypt-in front of where Saya slept. Asleep, she was asleep now and wouldn’t wake for decades but that was alright, Kai was prepared and he had a family to take care of.
“Julia and Lewis stayed behind. They’re keeping everyone else occupied so they won’t notice.” But they will; Kai knew that. It was only a matter of time. Yet even with a somber thought, he grinned a little wider at his mentor and infatuation.
It was a long and hard journey but here they were, alive and Saya, too. Even if she was sleeping, she was alive. She wasn’t dead like she once thought she would once it was all over. Riku might be gone, but not Saya and not the twins. Kai laughed out loud suddenly, shaking his head minutely.
David glanced over at him before sitting down next to the chuckling redhead, “You’re taking this better than I thought you would.”
Kai smiled a bit more honest, “I grew up. I knew this was coming. I was prepared. I’m a dad now too. I’m not a teen. I’m not a kid.” I’m not a Red Shield agent anymore. “I’m just me. Shouldn’t you be with Julia?”
Tilting his head back, the teen closed his eyes and breathed in the moment. David was sitting closer than he should be. There was a breadth of air between them and the breeze from the ocean caressed their skins and played with their shirts.
“She told me to come here,” the blond replied simply, “Kai, it’s alright to cry.”
“Cry? I’m not sad. Saya’s not dead. She’s sleeping and I’ll be here whenever I could on weekends with the twins to visit her,” Kai replied, shrugging a shoulder, “Riku might be gone but Saya’s not. She’ll wake up. Someday and the twins will get to know her then.” Even if I’m not alive when she wakes up, I have no regrets.
David smiled that slight grin of his before reaching out to touch Kai’s hand, “You shouldn’t be alone.”
“David,” Kai’s tone was brisk as he pulled his hand from the older man’s, “I’m not alone. And you shouldn’t do this. We ended it.” Long before it started. “I mean it when I said I have no regrets. Not anymore. I made my peace with Riku and the past.”
He heard a heavy sigh, “Kai. I’m only trying to help.”
“You’re not good at this, David, then. This isn’t helping.” It was Kai’s turn to sigh heavily, “You were drunk and I was willing. You didn’t do anything I didn’t want you to back then. Back in London. You’re not drunk now either and you have Julia. You’re going to have your own kid. Don’t throw them away.” Kai sternly stared at the older man before standing up. “It’s inevitable that Saya would go to sleep and it was inevitable that I would never have you completely. Don’t pity me, David.
“I care for you.” I love you. “But you have other obligations and I have mine.” Kai grinned slightly, already moving down the stairs, raking a hand through his hair, “Don’t give up on a woman who would do anything for you for a guy who didn’t know better, David. Marry her, be the kid’s father. Don’t be a stranger. We’ll always have London, if you want to think of it like that.” He turned around, preparing to wave when he found the other’s face right next to his.
His eyes widened when David closed the distance between them. Unconsciously, he started to close his eyes, hands and arms stiff at his sides, resisting the urge to wrap them around the taller man’s body. The fast pounding of his heart filled his ears with the wail of the wind that picked up around them. David’s arms wound their way around his waist, pulling him closer to the older man. The kiss remained chaste. Kai refused and refuted David’s efforts to open his mouth.
Raising his hands, he slowly pushed David off him and took one step down, staring at the concrete below their feet. “David…” He took a deep breath before looking up at the other man.
“Kai. Don’t be a stranger. Julia wouldn’t want that. We’ll come see you,” David murmured as he moved passed the redhead, “Julia wants to talk to you sometime this week. She wants to know if need help with the twins. She doesn’t want to part with them.” It sounded like a flimsy excuse veiling something that tugged at Kai. David was doing that cryptic talk again and Kai couldn’t make sense of it. Kai wasn’t sure if he wanted to.
It sounded like there was something in those words that he wasn’t sure he wanted to hear but wanted to nonetheless. “Yeah, sure. Tell her to call ahead of time. I’ll see what I can do with my online classes for my college degree and the restaurant. Having an extra hand for the twins would be good.” He shrugged, acting as if nothing happened. As if David didn’t kiss him.
The blond nodded briskly, “Oh and Kai? Julia understands that I…” A heavy pause made Kai strain his ears to hear the older male, “…would want something more than London. She wants one of her own as well.” David smiled that mysterious satisfied curl of lips.
Kai’s eyes widened; he stood frozen watching David before shaking his head, laughing even though his heart was breaking from a burst of emotion he didn’t want to name, “Sorry David. Not my thing. No offense but there’s something about you two that just screams I’ll be the extra wheel.
“You choose her, not me. We had London and well… That’s that.”
David paused before nodding briskly, “I’ll have her call you when she’s ready to talk to you, Kai.” He left without another word. The redhead watched him before raking both hands through his hair, sighing heavily; falling down onto the step he was sitting on with a muffled thud.
Legs parted and his hands dangling between his knees, Kai stared at the concrete. Doesn’t mean I wouldn’t want to try but it’s inevitable that you and I won’t make it. I want someone who I can call my own and just my own. I want someone like Haji is to Saya. Like Julia is to you.
I want you but I can’t have you and that is that.
