Useless Mimicry

There was no act to play in, no drama to act. Or rather there was nothing to do. He was not trying to be someone he wasn’t. He was not trying to do something he can’t-couldn’t-do. He was not trying to be optimistic because there was no other way. He was like that because he wanted to be. He was no pretender, no thrill seeker or avenger. He was none of that but yet one couldn’t help but think what he was doing was just for the chance to believe that everything was well when all was not.

He watched him from behind the bottle; watch him do what he pleased. He knew what the boy was doing and what the boy believed in. He watched from tired eyes, from shady trees and from the shed in the yard. He watched, he scoffed, he drank. That boy knew nothing. He was only bringing more hurt in himself and he couldn’t help but think of the days when he was like that. So naïve he was back then. It hurt.

Watching his former ward, he often wondered if the other was merely trying to be what he once was, a fighter, a leader, a failure. He could see himself in that redhead, in that teen but what exactly was there to be done?

The boy was a pretender.

There was no way he could really believe that she was alive, that he could still make a difference. He tried doing that, tried protecting the world but look at him. He failed, he lost everything. Why couldn’t that damn kid see that? Why did he persist in trying to be a mimic of the man he once was? Stupid. Idiotic.

The world they lived in was no more.

He didn’t care, but still he watched and waited. Waited for the day that the kid would finally realize that everything he done was for nothing. Being a pretender, trying to become the man he-David-once was is only going to make the realization hurt more and he hated the play he was forced to watch day in and day out; hated to see his former partner and ward still be tugged at the strings of fate and stubbornness. The war they fought is over and there was no way they could win.

Yet they still pretended they had a chance.

End

Anyway, I live off your reviews. Really. So please feed me?
