A Parent's Worth

“Beautiful,” he says, holding the baby in his arms, smiling at the woman beside him. His grin is wide and proud. He knows nothing but happiness as he sees the newborn in his arms. How loving he is, she notices, to their child, a feat she never thought she could accomplish. Especially since she had once been male, but due to unforeseen events, she found herself in a body of the opposite sex. She used to hate this body of hers but he, her love, her husband, helped her accept who she is--gave her reason to live. She loves him so much, her smile as bright as his as she stares at the baby and her husband.

“Indeed, he is,” she replies, panting heavily against the bed sheets and pillows, a sheen of sweat covering her body. The midwife pats her forehead with a damp towel which she smiles in thanks. One of her arms drifts upward from the bed, reaching for the baby, to see the life she bore for nine agonizing months. Her husband gives the babe to her and she laughs lightly. The newborn had accidentally punched her hand with his tiny fist. How cute, she thinks, moving her gaze from the miracle in her arms to the man she had promised forever to.

She smiles at him, wide and bright, her hair clings to the side of her face with sweat and she nuzzles the babe to her chest. For all it's worth, their son has not cried or shrieked. Wondering if that's normal, she kisses her newborn on the forehead. Feeling an arm on her shoulder, she looks up at the blond and grins wider than before.

“Do you have a name for him,” the doctor asks them both and she wonders what her lover had decided on. She told him to pick the name for their child.

He smiles at her before nodding at the doctor, “Yes. We do. Tristan Maes Elric-Mustang.”

Roy Mustang laughs lightly and shakes her head, not believing her ears. She was so sure he would have picked something else but she loves the name, nonetheless. “It's… perfect.”

“What do you expect? Of course, it is,” he taunts her lightly before kissing her on the lips in a chaste kiss. She returns it softly and pulls away slowly. “Though I was hoping he would have your eyes and my hair… I suppose my eyes and your hair will do just fine as well.”

Blinking at him, she stares at the babe in her arms and notices a pair of familiar gold eyes staring back at her, sleepily. “You're right… he does have your eyes and that might be best. At least I could read his emotions more. Perhaps he even inherited my genes. Wouldn't want a small fry for a son, right?” She smirks at him in amusement, watching a vein in his forehead twitch as he forces a smile back at her.

“Ha ha. Very funny, don't you think you should rest, milady?” He rolls his eyes at her before kissing her on the forehead, reminiscent of what she had done to their son.

She finds him later, standing over a grave. It is late at night and the moon is full. Walking closer, she notices whose grave it is and smiles softly; Trisha Elric's. She doesn't know if she should move closer to her husband or if she should wait for him to come over to her. Taking a deep breath, she takes a gamble, striding over to her lover's side, not saying anything. Gazing at him for a moment, she turns her gaze to the tombstone and nods out of politeness to her late mother-in-law.

An arm wraps its way around her waist, pulling her close. She laughs lightly, kissing his forehead and mouth, not minding that she still has to bend her head slightly to make contact with the blond alchemist. “Shouldn't you be inside sleeping?”

“Shouldn't you be at the party, celebrating,” she retorts with some of her usual smugness. “It's the day of our son's birth, you know.”

“Well… I just wanted to come out and say hi to her,” his voice is wistful and longing. She wants to hold him in her arms and never let go. Never before she thought she would want to do that. If asked, she would blame the hormones of her new body. It's not exactly something she would want to admit freely. Her pride wouldn't let her. “It's been… too long and well… I've been busy, you know? With you, the pregnancy…”

She nods and moves closer to him, resting her head on his shoulder, “I understand.”

“I mean… today was the day she… died,” he continued, “We found her dead and brought her a wreath of flowers because she loved those. I lost my parent that day and now… I've become one of my own, if that makes sense. I want to be a good dad, Roy. I want to be there for my kid. I don't want to be my father. I don't want to leave you alone.”

“You won't,” Roy states briskly, kissing his cheek, “I won't let you. I'm not your mother and… you know how selfish I am, Edward. Who else would I taunt and boss around if you're not here?” She smirks at him, cupping his cheek, “You know I love you and shouldn't that be enough for you to stay? We have Tristan to think about too.”

The blond nods briskly with a wide grin, “Tristan… he's quite the miracle don't you think?”

“Yes, he is. I think he's taking more after you than I would have liked. He's glaring at everyone with your glare.” She scoffs, rolling her eyes, “Eyes squinted and staring at everything. It's… cute. I'm almost tempted to think that this is probably what Maes have thought when first saw Elysia. Now he's lucky, don't you think? He didn't have to go through the birthing process.” Roy scowls and stares at the tombstone before them.

“Well… considering how on edge I was waiting for the news,” Ed pulls her closer to him, nipping lightly on her neck, “I think it's justified. We have a son, Roy. A real live, breathing son. Do you know how many nightmares I had about the Gate cursing me again? But he's perfect.”

She laughs softly and nods, “Of course he is. He's a Mustang.”

“Elric-Mustang,” he corrects with a similar grin of his own, “He's my kid, too, you know!”

Roy smiles at him and kisses his forehead lightly before staring at the text on the stone before them, “Mrs. Elric. I know… this might be unusual for you to know but as stubborn as this man beside me is, I love him. I may not be the best woman for him but I don't think that matters anymore. Formerly male or not, this lug is mine and I don't share.”

“Mom,” Ed watches the shadows of the engraving closely, “I want to make you proud. I want to be as good as parent as you were. I'm a father now and maybe next time I'll bring Tristan here. I named him after you, Mom. I really miss you but… I think I'm getting along well.” He clenches his automail hand into a fist; she thinks he's about to cry. “I have someone I love and everything is right. I think… I know why you cared about us so much and well… I'll try to live up to that.

“I love you, Mom. Miss you a whole lot and I'm sure Alphonse does,” she doesn't stop him but instead holds his hand tighter, smiling softly. Roy watches him silently, feeling blessed that he would share this intimate moment with his mother with her. “Sure, I've done some weird things in the past, sins really but… I paid my share, now I want to live my life and guide my son as much as you did for me. I won't be my father, though. I don't plan to leave.

“Not now… Not ever.”

He turns to look at the woman beside him, a rueful smile on his face. She leans down and kisses him softly, wrapping her arms around his shoulders. Pulling away, she brushes away his bangs from his face and replies, “I'm sure… she understands. Now… how about you come with me back inside? I'm tired and it's chilly out. Plus… shouldn't we spend more time with our son?”

“Of course,” Edward smiles at her, taking Roy's hand before pulling her back toward the house they're staying.

“Let's go.”
