Do your parents claim you as a dependent?

If they don't, this'll be easy to fix: Fill out a federal 1040EZ.

Notice that on line 5 you get to subtract $8,200 if you aren't a dependent. The amount you've got left over after subtracting $8,200 is your taxable income. And notice, too, that your taxable income is what they ask for on line 1 of your M1.

In your case, you should have a taxable income of zero on your 1040EZ. That means you'll get to enter zero on line 1 of your M1.

(Just to clarify: You can still fill out a 1040EZ if your parents do claim you, and it'll still reduce your taxable income some - just not by as much, and there are a few extra steps to go through.)

I am a dependent, and technically I don't even need to be filing taxes... but since I'm doing it I need to fill out a 1040A because I got some interest on some bonds and stuff. I definitely have a taxable income of zero just cuz I didn't make enough... I'll look at it again.

Okay. It sounds like you know what you're doing on the federal end of things. But yeah, it's that taxable income of zero that goes on line one of your M1, and that should keep you from owing Minnesota any money.
