My VW Jetta was creaking at medium-low speeds every once and a while for about a month, but I didn't do anything about it until it was more pronounced yesterday.
Verdict from auto repair shop: Left front sway bar link is damaged; both sway bar bushings are cracked. "Every time you go over a bump this gets worse. Eventually this will damage the frame of the car."

I'm glad I was worried and took it in. One of the many problems with knowing nothing about cars is that it's sometimes hard to tell when something is wrong. (And now you'll all say "creaking is definitely wrong!!")
