i am NOT good at academic tone at this point so can't help there. i've tried before on other people's papers and when i suggest saying "Johann wanted Heidi to stay in town" they say no, and re-write it "Following his internal compass of questionable moral ethics, Johann is compelled to beg Heidi to remain in the hamlet..." and argue that academics expect that sort of thing.
