dear self,
stop worrying. there is no reason to worry. everything is perfect.
love, self.

ps: things will be perfect tomorrow, and the next day, so don't worry then, either.

as proof that everything is perfect...
when i was five years old i went to jamaica over thanksgiving break. i thought i was so cool because i got a week off from kindergarten. my dad's company gave him a week-long vacation at a resort as part of his bonus. so they had a huge pool there and an equally enormous open bar. one day, my mom and i went to play bingo, and i WON a card. not only did i win, my prize was...

a handle of coconut rum.

so little five year old me marched right up and claimed the rum. my mom was petrified - she had no idea what to do, and she was frantic. so she told me i had to give it to my dad, and i was quite perturbed and indignant because i wanted it for myself! neither of my parents drink coconut rum (my father drinks whisky, and my mom drinks white wine or bailey's). the bottle sat in our liquour cabinet. mom used it once to make icing for a cake (which was apparently delicious).
tonight i really wanted a beer, but all we had was guinness. i'm not a huge fan, so my mom started looking around for other things to mix drinks with. i wasn't really interested, but mentioned that i did okay with coconut rum and diet coke. she said, "we have coconut rum! we've still got the bottle you won in jamaica." so of course i had to find it, and what do you know, there it was! most of it is still there, and the label REALLY looks like it's from 1991, but it was never refridgerated and it's still good.
so it's coming back to school with me. i won't drink it, nor will anyone else, except if it's a VERY special occasion. i've determined that i'm going to keep the alcohol as long as i can, and then keep the bottle forever. i've had it for almost fifteen years already. my mom said i should serve it at my wedding, but i reminded her that they were paying for good & unlimited alcohol. when i get married, the reception has got to beat my parents' reception, which was just legendary. (we don't have pictures, because the photographer hooked up with one of the guests, but i've heard whispers about it over the years. the soundtrack was all parliament and funk music, and it was apparently the party of the year.)

anyway, i thought that was really cool.
