11 hours at work today. Rough, but I cut 50 lines of if-checks down to a 2-line statement, removing an equal number of possible fail points. Which was fucking magical. Went for sushi as a celebration. Dropped $50 on it, but damn it was tasty and completely worth it. This week is probably going to be more of the same. Taking over more duties of one of the biggest grants at work, which is both cool and a ridiculous amount of work. BossLady and PostDocCollaborator both said I should be made the official lead for the project, but BossMan (the current lead) doesn't want to relinquish it. Even though I'm already handling the majority of the work / interaction, and the reason I'm not getting the rest is because he forgets (or "forgets") to tell me shit. See BossLady and PostDocCOllaborator voting for making me lead. Pretty exciting, actually.

Took a seminar last week on OpenMP, a set of compiler directives for adding parallelism to one's pre-existing C / Fortran programs. I know, who writes NEW things Fortran, right? About 2/3 of the people there, apparently. Wikipedia tells me it is still the most popular language in supercomputing. Weird. Anyway, it was super awesome, so I'm taking another seminar tomorrow on MPI, which is supposed to be more efficient / complicated / involved than OpenMP. Very cool things I hope to get playing around with on our cluster account more. Also planning on riding to UCLA and back, so add a good 13 miles onto my usual daily mileage of... 2. Wushu tomorrow night should be interesting. I might die a little.

Speaking of, made yellow belt like a pro. Also being more social with the wushu kids. Chono was on last week's episode of the Mentalist. Still a terrible show, but it was cool seeing someone I knew on TV. Ashlyn is going to be in the Green Lantern that's filming right now. Found out Anna is an animator for the Simpsons. I'm pretty sure I'm the only one at that studio not linked to the entertainment industry at all.

Just watched the men's downhill. Pretty fantastic. The Norwegian guy that took silver is fucking HUUUUGE. Bodie took bronze, though he still has plenty other chances to get gold before the games end. Surprised Marco Sullivan is still racing, but apparently he's still only 29 so has a good 5 years or more left in him as a perennial also-ran. Psyched to watch Stacy race in the women's downhill tomorrow. Julia Mancuso has been finishing better, buuuut she's a bitch. So go Stacey!

(It is still weird realizing I know people competing in the Olympics.)

The LA DIYbio group I'm helping get going is also progressing well, and we should have our first workshop by the end of the month. Lots of kids with UCLA ties means more time spent on the West Side (meh), but also better gear / spaces and contacts. This is another endeavor I am not going to let disappear. Interestingly, one of the other main people pushing things in the group is a bioinformatics RA in our big UCLA collab's lab. The one person at UCLA I'd met before OutlawBio. (At which: look at me being all attentive to the FBI!) Go figure. Tres amusant.

Misplaced my copy of Hardboiled Wonderland and the End of the World before I could finish the last 100 pages, so picked up a copy of The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle. Which I think I am going to read now while finishing my beer.
