My fingers skim along the cold granite tombstone and a chill runs through my spine. I can't help but wonder if he’s cold, which I know is foolish since his soul has long left his body, but I'm still questioning it. What if something happened? What if Wills decided to try and bring him back like she did for me that one time? Oh Gods, what if he’s stuck inside his small coffin? He’s not strong enough to break free.

Sobs fill my ears as I grab a chunk of the fresh sod that traps him inside. Tears slowly fall down my cheeks as I pull the earth out and toss it to the side. I have to save him, like he saved me. He’s stuck in there, surrounded by deceitfully peaceful looking white silk that lines the cherry wood coffin. He’s gasping for air, only smelling the stench of his once rotten body. My stomach lurches and bile rises so that the lonely sandwich and coffee I had earlier spills out to mix with the freshly disturbed dirt.

“Oh God…” It comes out no more than a whispered plea.

I'm gasping for breath as hot tears spill down my cheeks. What am I doing? I move from the soiled spot and lay my ear to the cool ground. I listen for the pounding I know could be heard if he were in there, alive. Moment’s pass and the only thing I can hear is the leaves rustling in the wind as they brush against one another.

I promised him I'd try to move on long before I knew I would lose him. We had gone for dinner, he'd taken me to this small bistro that was tucked behind some historic museum and surrounded by old oak trees that filled the air with the scent of leaves. We shared a bottle of my favorite red wine and I made him promise that if I ever didn't come home after a patrol of the latest apocalypse that he wouldn't hermit himself away. He had joked that he'd in fact move into a small cave in the woods of Sunnydale and then he made me promise the same thing. I thought it was silly at the time, I suppose he knew more than I did.

“I don't know how to do this, to be happy when I'm not waking up next to you.” I whisper with a cracked voice full of sorrow.

I swipe at the tears running down my face with the back of my hand, leaving soil marks on my face. I had promised him. I couldn't break that, but Gods I didn't know how to go on living either. I lost the man I loved and now I was suppose to just pick up and move on?

“How would I do it, Linds?”
