Ah so.

Employed again. It kind of sucks. I think I have moral objections about the method of payment, and payment system. I guess I wouldn't mind being a mechanic on commission, if there were enough work for commission to make me money. I guess I will just keep looking.

In class the instructor has been pressuring me to purchase a graphing calculator, more particularly the TI86 that only costs $110+. No thanks. He seeks it not for it's graphing capability, but because it can remember equations and lets you just fill in the numbers and so on.

We're in the middle of analysing JFET transistors/amplifiers. There's a ton of math involved. Mostly the quadratic equation. I played around with the cheapo $15 Casio I bought two years ago. It also remembers equations. But this is crap. So I'm not buying a TI$110 calculator, and I'm not going to hang on to using the Casio. No, I will fix my laptop and write a shell script to do all of this. No longer will I be 15x slower than everyone else with their supercalculators. Now my Thinkpad will make me faster.

I needed a hard drive, as the one in it went bad. Fortunately, at the spot where Ohio 64 and 65 meet, there was a sign: "Computers / Laptops $100 Free Intarnet!" So I visited this guy. He had a 4.8gb drive, which he sold to me for $30. Works. w00t! He asked me what I was going to do with it, so I told him I was going to wipe it and throw maybe Slackware on it.

He swore at me! "Ah, Jesus Chris..." Apparently, when it was time for his tongue to move from the roof of his mouth, allowing more air through as more was pushed through, forming a "T" consonant, he decided he was being insulting and he didn't finish the curse. He advised me that what I really needed was Windoes 98. He said it was the best thing evar. I sort of stared, because that's sort of like me telling my sister Amanda, who has a degree, to go back to EMU and retake it all again because she had some fun the first time around. He went on to rant about Windoes 2000 and WinXP and so on, saying how terrible they were. He ranked Windoes ME above 2000! Windoes ME is the one that tends to either never work well, or work great until it destroys itself in under 4 months.

I advised him I needed to run a shell script to do some calculations, and this would be difficult in a DOS shell. He sort of nodded in some odd way, and then went on to ask if I had backups. Uh. I said no, because nothing I have can't just be downloaded again, or reinstalled. Apparently he has every email he's ever written since 1989 backed up on CDs. I backed away slowly. He handed me his business card; apparently he's a consultant here in town. I wonder if he tells people to use WinME and back up all of their emails on CD.
